If all Omer Asik can earn is $5 mill per, he's going to be a steal. I would imagine a lot of teams are going to be trying to meet him at 12:01 a.m. on the first day of free agency. Hopefully Morey can sell him on coming here and being our starter.
He will be restricted. The Rockets best chance will be the free agency after if he signs the 1yr qualifying offer.
I'd say it's worth throwing the same deal at Brook Lopez that we did with Marc Gasol. Around 5 yrs/55mill?
The best thing that can happen is the Rockets use the cap space to take on salary to provide a lower tier team with financial relief in order to get a high draft pick for a shot at either Shabazz Muhammad or Nerlens Noel in the 2013 NBA Draft. This is what the Cavs did in taking on Baron Davis's contract for the Clips 1st rd pick, which ended up being the #1 overall pick in the draft.
Hi! This is my first post ever on ClutchFans. I was thinking about the Deadline Trades and the possibilities that the Rockets might have in the near future regarding the cap space they gonna have. I created a small excel-sheet with the current cap situation. If there are any mistake please feel free to correct me.
The Cavs did kinda set the bar on that, taking on $28 million to get another lottery pick, which weighted the lottery odds significantly in their favor when they had 2 chances out of 14. However, remember those were the odds. If you were actually going to buy the #1 pick outright instead of just buying another chance at the #1 pick, then you would probably have to take on a lot more money and why would a team trade the #1 pick just to dump salary unless they felt like the free agent pool had a couple players in it that were better than the lottery pick they were going to select #1? It just doesn't happen. Because if the free agent pool is better, then teams are going to covet cap space over the #1 draft pick. At best, the #1 pick may get swapped for a #3 or #4 pick plus a really good player or another draft pick, say #7 to #10. But only when the #1 player is not clearly distinguishable. That's not the case in 2012. Anthony Davis is clearly the #1 choice. Everything below him is up for debate.
Nobody really worth noting is worth the money in my opinion. We 7 players under contract next season if Fisher is bought out(I hope) and I have to agree and say save the cap space and make a run at Harden at next years deadline. -Hope Dallas is a top 10 team by seasons end to get their 1st. -Look to trade Scola and Martin if possible. -Bring over Motiejunas -Draft Leonard with NY pick -Resign Lee in the off-season
I think having cap room for the sake of having room is fine. Let's suppose the Rockets get no one and simply resign Lee and Dragic to manageable deals. In 2013 we can see if someone's available then. Having a ton of cap room allow you to take on contracts from teams wishing to shed salary. There's always a market for it. It may not be big market, but it's useful. Certainly a lot better than not having cap room and have your moves hindered by money. I've always wanted the Rockets to tank. But if they're not tanking, then the capspace provides and extra opportunity should the right player arise.
Its incredibly difficult to trade for early lottery picks. For instance , lets say the Rockets end up with 3 #1's in the upcoming draft - Theirs #12 , Dallas #23 and NYK #8. They could package all three of those together and still would have a difficult time moving into the top 5. Having all those #1's means roster space and guaranteed money - generally 120% of their slot. Really limits the amount of cap space a team would have in having 3 #1's. (sure you may be able to stash them across the pond). The Pistons route to the Larry O'Brien Trophy hasnt been duplicated since .... Since that time , the Spurs and Lakers have combined for 9 Championships. A little NBA history lesson ..... Every other team to win a finals series between 1980 to the present has had at least one superstar. Celtics - Garnet , Pierce , Allen. Mavs - Dirk Miami - D-Wade and Shaq After those , you go back to the 90's with the Bulls and Rockets combining for 8 titles. (Jordan and Hameem) Before that it was all Celtics & Lakers - at least one of them played in every finals between 1980-1989. Combined for 8 Championships. (Showtime Lakers - Bird , Parrish , McHale) The other was a team lead by Moses Malone .... 1980 to current - The Pistons were the only team to pull off a Championship without a superstar.
DWill announced that he will be a free agent and would like to retire on the team he plays for next. DWill to Dallas confirmed? please do some magic trick, Morey. Please.
I want to roll the dice with Oden.. there's nothing better worth throwing money at seeing all the rest are just established players already.
1) Batum (pretty sure Portland will match any semi-reasonable offer, but i think this guy is the best RFA on the market) 2) Ilyasova (if we move Scola, going after Ilyasova would make a lot of sense; he's a UFA that will probably cost what Scola costs) 3) Hibbert (he's a RFA that will command a crap-load and he's improved every years he's been in the league, but depending on what Indy's cap situation looks like, he might be worth going after) 4) Gordon (this could be tricky. If NO doesn't match an offer, does that mean his knees are shot, or just another bad decision by Stern?) 5) Dragic (UFA; he's a guy that can play the point, or the 2. His best years are ahead of him, and i think he's worth $5 mil a year). 6) Humphries (UFA; gives us what Scola cannot: defense and rebounding. I love his game and think he's an excellent PF in this league)
Use cap space to sign Deron Williams. Use Kyle Lowry + others to trade for Dwight Howard (who wants to play with Williams). Extend Howard. Win Championships.
