I can never remember whether it is your or Donny that is pretty much company line so I don't know if I'm wasting my time here or not, but here goes anyway... It has nothing to do with letting Mario go. I am in favor of that. Jason La Canfora has the cap numbers and has reported them. Lance has basically confirmed those (I don't know that they are Jason's that he confirmed, but what he confirmed matches up with La Canfora) The Texans are in a position that good teams go through, yes. But usually it is after being good for awhile. The Texans are going through cap hell after one good year. They built a mediocre team that finally went to the playoffs ONCE and then got into cap problems. I'm sorry if you can't see the difference between a team like the Steelers having cap problems after a 10 year run with multiple superbowls and the Texans having one. (FYI, the Steelers have more cap room than the Texans) The argument being used that because the Texans are good this is to be expected doesn't apply to the other teams in the league that have been on par or better than the Texans.

Dude, the Jets, Eagles and Chargers weren't on the Texans level last year, but until last year have been significantly better and have still managed to have plenty of cap room. Those three team. Basically every team in the league except for two has a better cap situation this year than the Texans. If you want to narrow the cap down to one year you can write off that fact. Unfortunately the cap is not generated in a year.
the same La Canfora that reported Walter had a broken collar bone and would miss 8-10 weeks? And sorry, Lance is a smart guy but he doesn't know the cap situation either...he's making his best guess, but it's still a guess. mediocre team?! Really? They could have easily gone to the superbowl with Schaub rather than a rookie 5th rounder. Mediocre? I'm sorry the texans aren't a dynasty as well and one of the greatest football franchises ever. FYI, the texans stomped a mud hole in the steelers last season It's not that they are good and should be expected, it's that this is something that all teams go through...all teams lose good players and have years were they can't go out and spend money left and right. It's just not possible. it's 2 freaking days into the offseason and i'm just not going to have some knee jerk reaction about the cap and management of it quite yet. And I certainly won't claim they are bad at it just yet. I'd rather let them do their work and see how it all comes out at the end of the day, Oh yeah, you still didn't provide me other examples of how they were "bad" at managing the cap.
Good for Mario. Best of luck in Buffalo. I guess it's time to change that. Brian Cushing? J.J. Watt? Joseph?
If that was him, he missed on that one. Everybody misses. Pancakes already tried to discredit him and the apologized via twitter when it turned out he was right lol. Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear. I meant they were a mediocre team prior to this year when they went to the playoffs. My bad if that was on me. I thought that was clear. I'm not expecting them to be a dynasty. I also don't hold them stomping the Steelers this one year to mean much in terms of...well...anything. So what? Other people want to use the "other teams go through this" excuse but when you mention other teams and actually look at their situations you dismiss it. No one expects that. The Texans have been up against the cap basically every year of their existence. Despite Pancakes demostrating poor memory, they've had to restructure deals every year, even when they sucked. They were restructuring guys like Seth Payne, cutting guys like Jamie Sharper, etc. because of that cap. That was when they sucked. Yes I have. You just don't seem to understand it. They were in a cap situation after one playoff appearance that required them to let Mario go (this had nothing to do with the Bills. They couldn't afford him regardless of that) cut their starting RT and fullback and pray the market doesn't shape up for their starting C and starting G. They structure contracts poorly.
Extending Demeco Ryans, thats 7 million. They didn't have to do that. Structuring Owen daniels contract to be paid out heavily in the first two years, screwing us out of close to another 7 million THIS YEAR.
Sorry Donkey if this is what you were looking for. I'm not going to go contract by contract to demonstrate to you where the cap is mismanaged. Baltimore is a team that every offseason makes moves. New England is a team that every offseason makes moves and has a ton of cap room. (that they often don't spend) Pittsburgh is a team that every offseason manages to keep their core together (with a few exceptions) and then draft to supplement. The Texans are a team that has been bad or mediocre every year under Kubiak until last year and yet they are still in salary cap problems. That's not something that happens to other "good teams" like people seem to think.
Because it is the least important and easiest to do well. The most important is what I mentioned first. You avoid cap issues first by drafting well and getting cheap talent. Then not messing up in free agency decisions and signing your own guys, third and least important is accounting.
The demeco deal was a little premature but it was understandable. He was the defensive heart and soul and a flat out leader. Not to mention he was playing exceptional. It's bad in retrospect but at the time it made sense. I didn't know the structure of ODs, but they did a similar thing with Arian, i.e. front loaded. That's one thing I just don't/didn't understand at all. You have to think there is/was a reason for that, or did Arian and his agent just have the texans by the balls in the negotiating room? the previous regime was terrible with how they spent their money and it did take a couple years alot of that to shake out.
I will answer any question you pose - I love banging my head against a wall of concrete for hours on end (helps even the playing field between us, actually). Fire away! In the meantime, you've now been challenged three times to provide something beyond, "The Texans haven't signed anyone, WAH!" posts and, to the surprise of absolutely nobody, you've shrunk from the challenge and hidden behind internet bravado instead. Speaking of... Do you see what you did here? LOL - of course you don't... You split hairs to weasel out of addressing your initial stupefying bluster (when I said “every team” I obviously didn’t mean “every team” – duh) and then immediately drew a specious conclusion that has no basis in anyone's reality to try and turn this around and get yourself off the hook: seriously, who is suggesting the Texans shouldn't attempt to sign free agents? Who?! We'd ALL love for them to - but they’ve already signed an insignificant piece (Foster) and have no cap room readily available beyond that. Citing the lack of activity from other teams is meant to deaden some of the hysteria (if we’re not getting better, at least none of our peers are, either) and provide some perspective on how much harder it is for good teams to maneuver when they have a solid core that wants to get paid. Note: most of the big signings have been courtesy of really bad teams. Anyway, sorry for the detour – where were we? Yes, it's quite obviously my insanity that people are seeking relief from... Keep celebrating your internet victory, cardpire. I'd have a t-shirt made if I were you.
Not really, he was never a game changer just really solid and great team leader. They paid him like a game changer (ie Cushing) That might be true for talent but not the cap. In the NFL you only get a cap penalty for one year when you cut a player. In Kubiak's second year the only starter remaining from Dom on the offense was AJ80. On defense they still had 4 but the only "bad contract" they still had at the beginning of their second year was Morlon Greenwood.
thanks...i will. sure was fun winning that last one when you threw in the towel by pointing out typos as a clever means of avoiding answering questions when you had dug yourself that hole you couldn't pull yourself out of. looks like you may win this one though, because i've been asked privately by multiple people to quit being baited by you and engaging with you, because they are sick of seeing your page-long nonsensical rantings and ravings. i apologize that this marks the historic end of you getting all steamed up at home because of me, and your grasping at every straw you can in your desperate attempts to disprove logic and justify your deluded ramblings. surely you can find somebody else in short order that you can direct your anger towards. going to concede even further, and say that you have made me realize my mistake in this thread, and i will attempt to only speak literally and not in hyperbole in the future so people like you can't misinterpret, and i now hope that the texans do nothing to further re-structure the team to enable them to pursue any possible new acquisitions to the team via free agency. as a matter of fact, please start a new thread entitled "Idiots, the Texans Can't and Won't Sign Any New Players This Summer, And You are a Moron if You want them to do so". I will be on board, and you will have my full backing and support throughout that thread. also, will you make sure to remain consistent, and lash out at Rockets2K for putting words in my mouth and saying that i brought peyton manning chatter into this thread? surely you are an upstanding enough dude to do that, rather than attempt to use that as an example of somebody joining with your cause, right? thanks again. so, just to clarify, and to avoid you posting a page-long response, breaking down every single sentence with silly responses of insults and forced wit: You win in this thread. i concede. You did it!!
There's no way you give Mario that kind of deal no matter how much cap space you have. 100 mil, with 50 mil guaranteed. As for the current cap problems, the Texans are up against, but they're not in salary cap "hell." They had to cut 1 starter to get under the cap, lost a starter whom they had already replaced, and locked up the best player on the team for 5years. There's no shame in that.
