More than likely its to force them to the table to get a deal done so they can get their separate deals done. No other teams are going to make deals until the large domino falls. The Rockets need to make moves, even small ones like moving the 09ers for one or two picks, as much as anyone.

Also, there is the relationship factor with Orlando and Otis Smith. He is doing Orlando a huge favor here. Do not discount that fact.

Lastly, if all else fails and New Jersey Doesnt offer enough to make it worthwhile, they just might get a rental Dwight at the right price that Morey can live with. (As reported earlier by Chris Mannix of SI)

I don't think the Nets have the assets to offer more than we can, dobro... when it comes down to it, it's that simple.

In the end, it may be painful to beat out NJ, but I hope Morey mans up and gets it done whatever it takes to beat the Nets bid.

Don't think the assets are the problem, its the one "BIG" asset that NJ has. Brook Lopez is 7 foot and one of the best centers in the league of not very many good ones. That could be the be all end all at the end of the day.

Brook Lopez is not one of the best centers in the league, he is always injured, and he is worse as a centerpiece than Kyle Lowry.

Honestly he is a Kevin Martin level asset, and I mean that sincerely. He's an all-offense player who brings little else to his team. He's always injured. And he is about to get paid, as an RFA.

I agree.. but somehow folks on this board think that Lowry's value is greater than 7 foot 18ppg 24 year old center.

Who blocks less than a shot a game, plays terrible defense, and grabs 3 whole rebounds a game? Who will also be paid more than Lowry next season on an escalating scale for years after that?

Lopez is not a dominant presence in the paint, and he's missed most of the season with two separate injuries.

I don't think some of you understand how much it hurts a team to build around a center who doesn't rebound. Here's a hint: Look at the Rockets before and after we lost Yao.

In terms of "Asset", which Orlando can flip to get a lottery pick or some other player, he has more value in this league than Lowery.

Lowry is virtually pay so lets trade for pay then send him to Orlando with bud and martin and get Dwight!!!

that Orlando team could probably compete for a playoff spot and we would make it out pretty good too!

To be fair, a lot of his dip in rebounding came after he started sharing minutes with Mr. Kardashian, who is a monster rebounder. In his rookie season, he posted a 15.8 rebound %, which isn't great, but not as horrible as it seems now. I'm sure he's at least an average rebounder if he's not playing with Hump. For reference, Yao had a career 16.5 rebound %.

    According to who?

If you were to ask around the league, I guarantee GMs would rather have Lowry, who is cheaper, healthier in the long term, and a better player.

@WojYahooNBA: Teams trying to get packages together for Dwight Howard are frustrated with tight window. As Western exec. says, "Just not enough time."

not a good sign, for those of us that want it to happen.

His rookie season was a long time ago. His RB% has dropped every year and along with it the number of rebounds he snags.

Centers that can't board and defend are just fat small forwards with limited range

Exactly. The Magic most likely want a center back and the Rockets don't have one to offer.

Like I said, his drop in rebounding % coincided with when Kris Humphries started getting minutes. I'd say his rookie numbers are more indicative of his real rebounding ability - average. As an extreme example, if you pair Dwight with Love both of them aren't going to get 20+% of the rebounds each.

To play with their excellent team of perimeter roleplayers? [/sarcasm]

Seriously--If they had anything resembling a solid squad around Howard, he wouldn't be leaving in the first place. What they need more than anything is value--it's the same situation as drafting for position instead of drafting the best player available. They need to be getting the best trade package they can, not worrying about what position the players coming back play.

Anyway, if it comes down to it, we can offer the rights to a 7-footer of our own, who actually rebounds: Motiejunas.

Brook is not fat but I get the picture.

He can go for 38 any night... a fitting small forward.
