Perhaps he really did make up his mind last night. If so, it's not surprising he hasn't filled out the form yet and submitted it. My guess is he'll sign it by 3 p.m. tomorrow.

Keep in mind, this doesn't guarantee that Dwight Howard stays in Orlando long-term. It means he'll be a free agent in 2013, with Chris Paul.

This is just getting stupid... if we have another drama in 2013 with howard and cp3 I am going throw up.

So you think we can keep patching stuff together and save cap room for 2013? lol JK!

That's a good reason he would resign because that trade is more than just picking a player... moving Carmelo for a true PG is an existential shift for the NYK and those headwinds were too strong for D'Antoni to survive.

    1. Jeremy Lin = $$
    2. Carmelo = $$
    3. D'Antoni had used up his capital, NYC was already looking past him.

This makes sense now....probably a "him [Carmelo] or me" type of deal and NYC picked Jeremy Lin & Melo.

Idiots. But rich and (in the short future: richer) idiots.

but that's when his contract ends. this would be him playing out his contract. maybe orlando does enough to convince him to stay.

honestly, i'm not getting the criticism for howard making this decision.

    What's wrong with you guys?

What Dwight is telling people is he will not opt out if the Magic agree to let him walk for nothing after next season. In other words, he's not going to sign a document to stay unless the Magic agree that he stays with them through next season and them he walks away for nothing. It's all a ploy to scuttle possible trades and force the Magic into lame duck status with nothing accomplished.

Morey has to set a deadline with Otis on our involvement and Otis has to set a deadline with Dwight to get him committed. The Magic aren't going to agree to letting him walk for nothing.

I've seen a contract faxed to a local office and driven over professionally to a college campus with a local notary and rep just 20 minutes after the end of a phone call. This was for a small time endorsement deal for a future Olympian who I went to school with.

You're telling me this couldn't have happened immediately last night after their HOME game? Even right now? As many lawyers, accountants, chauffeurs, interns, that Dwight's agency and the Magic have between them this routine piece of paperwork could have been signed on the bus, on the plane, in the locker room where he gave that speech, etc.

In the world of multi-million dollar business.... your word means nothing without the paper. So you're right, he has until 3 pm but I'm skeptical.

Said one Magic player on Howard meeting: "Next year was not even mentioned in meeting...He told us he was "all-in" for this season."

Howard will be in a Mavericks or Nets uniform next season, no doubt in my mind.

Three Magic players tell Y! Sports (2 to @SpearsNBAYahoo) and one to me that Dwight Howard did not tell them he was opting in for next year.

+1. Once again, another poster makes my point better and with fewer words. I should work on that.....

Don't listen to the player, he is self-interested (evidence: shooting down CHI trade that would be great for both teams so he can make more $$ from Adidas).

Of course it could have been done last night. It's also possible he waited to talk it over with his agents and people he trusts.

I'm an attorney and deal with contracts and deals on deadlines all the time. there are umpteen thousand reasons why the document hasn't been delivered as of yet...one of which is the reason you give - that he's just playing them.

Dwight was just telling teammates he was opting in to a 401K plan. Everyone was just confused. Carry on.
