Looks like he opted in for his last year on his current contract. http://www.wftv.com/news/news/local/source-dwight-howard-stay-magic-through-2012-13-se/nLSmb/
If this is true, what does Deron do? Does he have the same one-year player option? Would he really wait another year for Dwight?
If this is legitimate then I give Dwight a lot of credit. He is giving Orlando one more year to put together a team that can make a run. Otis Smith has failed thus far, it shouldn't be that hard to build around Howard. He is a non factor the last 5 minutes of a game on offense, but he is the only really good center in the NBA.
It's the media that creates all the fuss. He's short with his answers and doesn't have much to say when asked quiestions all the time. The media then speculates and speculation becomes "in his own words"
agreed...i guess his words after last night's game were genuine, not just a ploy to come away as the good guy/a cover-up to not want the nets gutted before he went there.
Dwight is dumb if this is true. His stock is the highest right now having a beastly season and he can lock up 4 or 5 year contract this summer. Who knows what might happen between now and next year. An injury could happen, nobody knows. More important than the NBA contract he could lock up is the Adidas deal he'll be signing this summer. Derrick Rose got a 10 year 250 million dollar contract. Depending on the contract, it could be more than enough to offset the pay cut from going into free agency. It makes more financial sense for Dwight to maximize his deal with Adidas, even if it means to take a pay cut and one less year on his NBA contract.

So basically, we are going to have the exact same situation next year? You have got to be kidding me.
It doesn't really make sense for Dwight. What difference will one year make? Realistically what can the Magic do in one year they couldn't do in the past 6 years? Logically. it doesn't make sense. I guess if Dwight wanted to "roll the dice". But yeah, he could get injured between now and then, he could lose millions on the deal with Adidas, and basically we'll probably be in the same situation this time next year. There's no real upside for Dwight Howard in the financial sense. If he beasts again next year, he will get the same contract he would have gotten this year. Only thing is it opens up the possibility of him losing out on alot of money next year. Dwight is taking all the risk here. Well I guess they could also win a championship though, right? Chyeaaa right!
