Agree. When gambling you don't wager anything more than you can afford to lose. Not sure Orlando wants our scraps but if NJ doesn't offer something and no other team is interested in a 20 game rental then this may be their best offer.

The downside of this is it who ever we trade, it will almost certainly costs us a lotto pick because the rental increases our chances of becoming that 8th seed.

Salary Cap 101: You cannot use cap room and then use cap exceptions. In order to use cap room in the first place, you must first waive and renounce all cap exceptions. No MLE for the Rockets this summer if they clear cap room..

jopatmc, let's just chalk this up to you being over-excited about the prospect of getting Dwight. I'm pretty sure you know this already.

Bima, I read that in the new CBA every team (regardless of whether they start out with cap space) gets an MLE. For teams under the cap I believe the MLE is $2.5M per season for two years.

    Woj on DP:

    (I'm paraphrasing)

Nothing we didn't know already, really. Still thought I'd share.

Edit: HMMHMM beat me to it.

Woj says Houston is a "contender" for him but they'll have to temper how much they give up for a possible 8-9 week rental. Get him, try to re-sign him to 5 year, 100 million dollar deal since they'll have his bird rights and try to convince him to stay and then go recruit D-Will to come back to Texas.

Correct, that exception would be available to an under-the-cap Rockets team, although it's not really a MID-LEVEL exception. It has become known as the Room Exception. It allows teams right at or close to (but not over) the salary cap to use an additional $2.5M on one or more players to exceed the cap. This amount cannot be aggregated with cap room to offer free agents more money, though.

Thanks for pointing this out. This is the one exception that can still be used by cap room teams. Forgot to mention it.

I admire Morey's balls, but jeez... talk about wishing upon on a star.

Actually, I didn't. I thought if matching Lee's contract offer took us over the cap that we would have the MLE available without having to wait a year. Oh well. I yield to your expertise on this. I don't match your knowledge base on the Cap.

Haha. Before posting I was hitting F5 a few times to see if you'd do a transcript of some sort. :)

Nothing groundbreaking from Woj here though.

This strategy likely necessitates their offer including both Scola and Martin.

With Orlando already having Anderson, Big Baby, J-Rich and Reddick, and with a full rebuild a distinct possibility, would the Magic have sufficient interest in our two veterans?

Donny, we have loads of cap space. Guys like Asik and Gordon are out there. Not only that. We can still take on a trade, say Okafor and whoever New Orleans took with their pick for basically nothing. There's all sorts of options with cap space.

You get to tank like most people here seem to want.

I hope when this LSD-induced Deron Williams / Dwight Howard fever dream fails that Morey at least has something semi-plausible up his sleeve. Yeah, let's go after Deron Williams, too, leaving NJ zero All Stars:

"Oh, you want Deron so you can also have Dwight? And we get neither of them? Great. Let me concede that."

Don't know that. But all this trade talk involving Morey should have let Orlando know their worth around the league. And Martin is an expiring next season as well.

The key is we can take back salary from Orlando. That's a huge key to them being able to remain competitive. We can either take on Hedo or we can take Duhon/QRick (my preference) while we take out Dwight. If Orlando wants cap space, we can shovel them a boatload of that as well. We can actually get them significantly under the cap for the offseason and then turn around and move one or two of Martin/Scola for expirings and still be positioned to sign Deron (most likely though we would trade for him with what we had left over).

I think the main assets given will be the Knicks pick (looking more valuable recently) and maybe a couple of younger/overseas guys. The vets can always be flipped for other assets like picks.

You have to amble to win big. Cap space and Morey behind the helm can surround great players with good role players. Either we take a chance with renting a star or tank and try to draft one. Which would you prefer?

It's likely Martin and Scola gets traded elsewhere to teams that actually want them for assets that we ship to Orlando.

I find it unlikely Orlando would want either one. But if going after howard and d-will is the plan, they both have to go.

I'm all in on this. Parsons and Lee are the only guys i would be hesitant to trade, but if necessary them too.

Some grab-bag of Morris,Bud,Ppatt, Lowry, picks, donats, llull, Scola, Martin and the 09ers should be more than enough.

This team isn't gonna get us close to a title, so what are we risking.

I've already stated that I am in favor of renting Dwight.

I also have no problem taking on salary to make it happen since we still have the amnesty clause to dump one for cap space in the offseason.

Correct Bima? Couldn't we take back, say Hedo in a trade and then amnesty him in the offseason?
