Are you saying that its better for Orlando to just let him walk and not get rid of the Hedo contract?

Courtney Lee and Kevin McHale are two of the only guys in the world that could convince Dwight to stick around for the long haul.

That said, do not get your hopes up.

If you get D-will, you trade Lowry and upgrade at whatever spots you need.

There will be suitors for his production at his type of contract.

I don't think Orlando would let us rent Howard for more than 3 games given that package.

There are about a dozen, and I'm underrestimating here, posts on just this thread stating that if we rent Howard and he walks, then it's a good thing because our roster will be empty and we can rebuild. Why is no one realizing that if he walks away from Orlando that it's now Orlando that has the money to go after players they would like to have? Oh, and without a doubt it would take draft pick(s) to get the deal done, so he walks and we don't have our draft pick, or future draft pick to fall back on when we're the Bobcats.

We can offer them a package that allows them to get rid of the Hedo contract and doesn't hurt them in the future. A package that is made up of draft picks, young talent and expirings will help their rebuilding process. Some combo of Lowry/Motie/Morris/Patterson/Knicks Pick/Lull/09ers for Howard/Hedo does them a big favor. The magic really won't want Hedo on the books for the next two years. If they take our offer after next year they can have very minimal cap space taken up and might get lucky and get a quality young player out of the Knicks pick.

You are ignoring that both teams have very different cap situations. The Magic still have to pay players like Reddick, Hedo, Jameer, Davis and JRich next year even if Howard walks. They don't have a ton of cap space next year if Howard just walks away. However, if we can get rid of Scola and/or Martin before the trade deadline and lose Howard we can always use our amnesty and really only have the Hedo contract as the only ugly contract on our books. Getting rid of Hedo would really help Orlando.

Why don't you take your obnoxious POLITCAL signature and shove it where the sun don't shine, chump?

Political signatures are not allowed here. I repeat... political signatures are NOT allowed. Goofus.

God, I love this team. What a great win!

If the Rockets rent Howard, the decision of whether he stays or bolts in the summer will come down to whats on the roster in comparison to what is on the rosters of the mavericks and nets.

At a cap of 58 million, subtracting out two max contracts for Williams and Howard leaves about 20 million in cap space. So if Houston can utilize that 20 million in "cap space" better than the Nets and Mavericks, they may be in a position to retain Howard and sign Williams. So the following scenarios:

    a) Dallas has Dirk occupying its 20 million in cap space next summer (20.9M to be exact). But they would have to shed Shawn Marion off their books. Considering they don't have any draft picks to sweeten a deal (Odom trade) they would have to attach Beaubois to a Marion trade to convince someone to take his fairly large contract off their hands, which ironically would become even larger after his 15% trade kicker "kicks" in. Not sure if there are any takers for that contract in this climate.

    b) New Jerseyhas 17.34 million of their 20 million "cap space" tied up in Farmar, Morrow, Petro, Sean Williams, James, and Brooks. Adding Lopez's cap hold and a probable top-5 pick roughly adds another 10 million, thus the total goes up to 27.34. Of course, New Jersey could use a combination of draft picks to unload some of the salary on their books, but the question comes down to which draft picks. How ironic would it be if the nets could unload salary using the Rocket draft pick in the Terrence Williams trade. Lets say it takes the Nets top-5 pick to dump Farmar and Petro for an expiring contract. The nets would be using their 20 million in cap space on Lopez (who arguably would not be an ideal fit at PF next to Howard due to spacing issues), Brooks (stud), Morrow (shooter) and filler.

All in all, if the Rockets could rent for Howard and use their 20 million in "cap space" to create a better supporting cast than the nets, maybe Howard will resign and Williams will come in free agency. Depending on who is traded for Howard, would Lee, Budinger, Parsons, Morris, and Scola be a better supporting cast than New Jersey?

We can assemble a package which allows them to tank effectively next year and also rebound MUCH faster the season after. That's a lot better than sucking for 5 years.

you know what would suck if it was a rental the rockets would still probably have enough pieces to make the playoffs and thus giving the Nets their first round pick

that being said i would still prefer a rental because Les' idea of -- and it is Les' idea-- trying to rebuild while being successful really doesnt work unless you're in LA and even then it wasnt like they were successful either until they got Gasol. Miami was not doing that great when they got lebron and bosh. Basically by gutting the roster and given Les what he wants - another superstar (a center at that) Morey ensures the team makes the playoffs this year -- when Dwight walks to NJ i mean the harsh reality is that there is no way the team would be good with the players they have and so either full "tank" mode or trading away players who would be better suited for other teams (ie scola, martin - depends on who is still there) and acquire future 1st round picks and just rebuild through the draft and hope with the extra cap space you can then also sign one all-star in free agency

it sounds pretty simple - IMO too much crap has dropped on Morey when it was Les that gave him the mandate of win and rebuild. I am sure if the mandate was just rebuild there would have been a lot more roster changes than what we've already had seen.

For those of you claiming that we should give our young talent for Howard and Hedo, with the intent if blowing up the franchise for the chance at a top 5 pick....

Wouldn't it make more sense to simply take on Okafor plus the NO pick? That way we retain our assets, take on a bad contract in a position of need, and land a top 5 pick this year.

What else does NO and MR. NO Stern want for the pick? If its just taking okafur that's a no brained but I'm sure they want more.
