damn, this long of a thread for Winston? Would have thought Schaub was cut... How Jacoby is still with the team amazes me...that's one guy who deserves to go...
agreed. it's Fubar! As for Mr. eric winston, he will probably end up with the Ravens. Sign Eric and cut the blind side. blind side is not as good as sandra bullock made him out to be and he is slow at our style of running the ball, which the ravens have been trying to mimic.
At first I was like: I'm ok with this I guess, he is only a bit over avearge, not as good vs. the pass, yada, yada, ...but now looking at the big picture, I think losing Eric sucks
Between 26 and 58: Mike Adams (T) Zebrie Sanders (T) Bobby Massie (T) James Brown (G/T) Kelechi Osemele (G/T) Glenn (G) (probably out of reach) Zeitler (G) Aminie Silatolu (G) Konz (C) Some of these guys could slip into the third. Most are a reach at 26....but won't last until 58. Tricky. If I'm Rick Smith, I target Konz. Rashard Butler already seems earmarked to step in for Winston, and though Caldwell stunk stepping in for Brisiel, Kasey Studdard should be back. There's also apparent optimism for Derek Newton.

Starting to like Rick Smith more and more. I really liked him when he came in, because his name wasn't Charlie and he seemed pretty smart. But then he started to lose me, then it went to crap. But now, it seems like he has hit his stride (and fortunately/unfortunately) learned on the job enough to be a an actual GM.
[rQUOTEr]There is an asterisk attached to the surprising release of long-time Houston Texans right tackle Eric Winston. A source told FOXSports.com that Winston was listed under the “waived/failed physical” designation by the Texans when cut. Winston, though, told FOXSports.com that the billing stems from his having undergone arthroscopic ankle surgery in February. In a text message, Winston said he will be medically cleared in two weeks. Winston also said he would be fully healed by now had he undergone the minor procedure in January. At that time, Winston had no idea he wouldn’t be playing for the Texans in 2012. He had started every game for the past five seasons and was considered one of the league’s better right tackles. But with a $5.5 million base salary for 2012 and the Texans having salary-cap issues, Winston became expendable. Winston was en route to South Florida on Tuesday night for a visit with the Miami Dolphins. Winston played at the University of Miami and his brother Matt is a Dolphins college scout.[/rQUOTEr]
So Lance was saying this morning that there has been no offer made to either Brisell or Myers and we could lose both. They're letting Myers test free agency to see what the price will be. DANGEROUS move, and if we lose 3/4 of our starting O-Line and Mario, somebody better have an explanation as to why our cap was so ****ed up to begin with. This is getting ridiculous.
LZ says that Kubiak was at the combine talking about how the priority for the Texans needed to be maintaining continuity on the OL. Strange. Hope we're able to retain those guys. Honestly, I'd prefer they spend resources somewhere other than Mario Williams....but I really hope they're able to hold on to the OL.
Seems like they're going to let all their FAs test the market and *hope* they come back to them to let the make a comparable or somewhat comparable offer. [rquoter] We'd love to have all of them and we'll make every effort. We have some good players out there but there are some things beyond our control. They need to see what the market says they're worth and hopefully they'll give us a chance to sit down with them and see if we can work something out that makes sense for them and for us. Thats the way we progress.[/rquoter]
They've never managed their cap well that's how. People have correctly pointed out that this year we are losing players because we are a good team, but the Texans have been up against the cap basically every year because of the way they've structured contracts. They've released players before or let players walk in FA, it's just that they've never been good enough to matter. Lance often pimps for Chris Olsen as a cap expert, but I completely beg to differ.
I think it stemmed from the Casserly era, where they were almost blowing money just to spend it, with no thought of the cap. Considering we were a new franchise, there was no sense for them spending up to the cap - they should have been well below, relying on guys in their first contract or journeymen/2nd tier FAs playing for small checks. But CC was handing out starter money to journeymen backup busts and found himself having to shed Glenn and Sharper after year 3. I want to say that it wasn't until the last year or two that they began to pay real attention to the cap and how to maximize it. I think the Dunta saga woke them up to it, and the Andre extension hammered it home. All of a sudden, they were starting to develop guys that deserved a second contract or big pay raise. I'm not mad at the Texans regarding this year's class of FAs - they were never going to be able to afford to keep Mario unless he wanted to leave substantial cash on the table. They're not lowballing the linemen, but they are smart enough to have a dollar value assigned to them. You can't overpay to keep guys in this league - they would have to cut them in a year or two anyway. Longterm, it'll be better to draft Konz than to give Myers over $4M a year. There are a couple of guys left on the roster that can mitigate the losses. Duane Brown is up next year, and the dumbest thing they could do would be to squeeze 2013 cap space now.
