Had the same thought myself. They showed Carl rummaging around in the leaves trying to find the gun when the walker was crawling toward him, which implied that he lost it at the scene of the attack.

It looked like to me Shane and Rick were on the way back to the farm. You can see by the "foreshadowing" scenes that Rick and Shane were almost back at the farm.

I don't love the Carl character but I'm not sure why everyone hates him so much. After Dale died my two most hated characters were Shane and Rick. I was hoping Carl would kill zombie Shane and living Rick with one bullet.

I'm damn glad Shane's gone. One of the most annoying characters in TV history if you ask me. But I don't know how much more Rick I can take.

turning into a zombie is just the next step of human evolution, they just need to accept it.

Can't you say both things about 90% of the cast?

So pretty much in the end we'll be rooting for the zombies?

Was not expecting that last night. The past few episodes have been pretty entertaining.

But if Shane's plan was to murder Rick, why would he choose to do it in an open field with a clear sight line from the house? I never got the feeling they were going back to the house but even if they were, why wouldn't Shane have tried to kill Rick 1) in the woods and 2) farther away from the house?

That actually wasn't Carl's gun, it was Daryl's. He got it out of his motorcycle bag.

Not really but it's not unwatchable to me (like say Two and a Half Men, Parks and Rec or 30 Rock). And it's kind of the show you love to hate.

There are a few inconsistencies with the episode but I'm not so sure the fence, the time elapsed and Shane's plan are among them. That fence probably existed before the zombie apocalypse to contain livestock, and can probably keep a few random zombies wandering aimlessly at bay. But I don't think anybody expected a whole horde to show up at the farm's entrance. I imagine it'd be like the car crash scene where the zombie relentlessly pushed through the windshield. The fence will give, as it should.

As for the time frame...it looked closer to sunset when Shane came back and the group headed off into the woods. Remember they got a late start taking Randall because Rick decided to talk to Carl first. In addition I don't think it'd be all that hard to wander in circles only to be about a 100 yards from the farm. Shane might have just been biding time until they make it to the clearing. It's not like Rick didn't know what was up almost from the beginning either so he was just going along hatching his own plan. If it all started at sunset, it's easy to assume they could have been searching for an hour or more and it be dark. Now we don't know when Carl left the house...maybe everyone heard the shot but couldn't tell where it came from, and he just happened to be staring out into the field with the binoculars and saw them and took off when no one was looking. He's wandered off on his own before why stop now.

And Shane's plan...it's not gonna be the most sound and Rick even told him that. I think the fact that he locked the barn door shows he wasn't in a clear frame of mind. He finally completely cracked and came up with that plan on the fly. One second he was about to shoot Randall right in the barn and only stopped when he saw the handcuffs and the blood. His plan wasn't well thought out and it shouldn't be. I also don't think Lori was trying to give him hope but just to make amends, which was still stupid given his frame of mind.

I could be wrong, but I think people realize that.

Unless I'm mistaken, Carl started out with no gun. He then took Daryl's gun from the bike and lost it in the tussle with the walker. Then he suddenly had it in his possession at the start of this past episode.
