I understand trying to motivate your kids.. but that is taking it entirely too far. Hey Pat, maybe you're just not a good coach.
This topic was getting a fairly considerable amount of airtime on sports radio today. I never listen to Carl Dukes on 97.5, but I happened to stop there while he and his co-hosts were talking about this issue today. During their discussion, they actually took a call from a woman named Monica (I think) who is the mother of one of the seniors in question. She admitted that her son had missed a team meeting and a shootaround at different points of the season because he had overslept. I found it interesting that the mother of one of the players called in, but the conversation with her was a bit disappointing. She and the hosts kept going around in circles. She said that she supported Knight's decision to discipline her son for him missing team functions, but she felt he went over the line when he lashed out at the team in front of the media. Dukes and co. came back with "Well, you heard him in the interview (they had just finished interviewing Knight)...he said he had tried to get through to the team other ways, but was left with no choice but to go public." She would then basically just re-state her point that Knight should have kept the issues in-house, followed by the hosts re-stating that Knight claims he had tried everything else.
Has anyone that is complaining about him even been to a Lamar game, or yet alone seen how these players act? Completely justified. It was the right decision..
Lamar plays McNeese Saturday for the conference championship. If they win, Lamar will make the tournament, and it'll be the most Lamar has ever been talked about in the national media. Yes, I know they had some good teams in the 80s and went to a Sweet 16, but the tournament wasn't nearly as big a deal then, and no one knew who Billy Tubbs and Pat Foster were yet.
And they're in. Expect this to be a huge story again when they play Mizzou or whomever in the first round.
McNeese State did the dirty-work for Lamar by blowing out UT-Arlington yesterday and no-showing today. What a spectacular flame job after a season-best win. All to Lamar's benefit.
The problem is he's painting the entire team with the same brush and giving no specifics. It allows you to assume the worst about all of his players without knowing any details.
As a student during Pat Knight's time at Texas Tech University, I can say we were all happy when his time was over there.
Ha! Awful, but that is par for the course during Knights time. We actually have a couple guys on the roster over 6'9" finally. That is a breathe of fresh air.
They're bad, but they aren't really any worse than they were under Pat Knight. Pat's Red Raiders were kept form being absolutely putrid largely thanks to Mike Singletary and John Roberson, the last two big-time contributors that were recruited by Bobby Knight.
