My 10s? Hoop Dreams The Man Without a Past The first half of Lawrence of Arabia Into the Wild Citizen Kane Christmas Vacation And many more...
50/50.....8.6/10 Glad nobody saw me watching this..........eyes watered like a little b****. laughed some too.
Actually I would've given Chronicle a 9 or 8.5 at the least. It's really good. I just couldn't handle the camera shaking and all. Got me a little sick in the beginning. I really hate when movies go for "realistic" shaking cameras. wished they would've made it as a normal movie and gotten rid of the "hay gais, i just got a new cameraz, im recording errthangz!" aspect. I'm a sucker for superhero movies. This counts as one IMO. Also, I give all Jason Bateman movies at least an 8
John Carter- 5/10. Pretty mediocre IMO and the acting was horrid in spots. Special effects were decent though.
Dammit I kinda knew it was going in that territory... I'll wait for a cheap matinee to see it then...
I saw this movie on Facebook about some bad guy in Africa. It had a really cute blonde kid in it a bunch of chicks crying in it so I figured I could get laid if I sold my house and donated it to the people that made it and posted that on Facebook. I'm sleeping on my friend's couch now. 6/10, 10/10 if I get some...
Has anyone seen Immortals? I'm finally gonna nab it on DVD since I didn't get a chance to watch it in the theatre. Thoughts?
John Carter 8.5/10 I will attempt to avoid spoilers until later. Remember that feeling you had when you first heard that Disney was making a movie based one of their amusement-park rides? What? A *ride* based on... the Pirates of the Caribbean ride?? Seriously? Have they lost their minds? Oh man, THAT is going to suck. You know the movie, starred Depp and Bloom, The Tearrible Awful Mean Pirate Barbossa, and the angelic Keira Knightly..? Didn't suck. Turned out, it was an insanely good and fun movie, filled with lots of humor, action, and fastidious attention to detail. When we went to the theater to check out Pirates of the Caribbean, we went in with low expectations, and not really having any idea what we were in for. And we left extremely surprised and happy. Hey! That didn't suck! It not only didn't suck, it was actually really really good! I mention all of that because that is exactly the same way that I approached the new John Carter movie, also from Disney, just like Pirates. Now I confess right up front, I had no real knowledge of the source books - I have never read any of the Edgar Rice Burroughs books. I have always been a science fiction fan, but my eyes were always aimed to the future, not into the 'golden age' of the past. So I have never bothered to read Jules Verne, Burroughs, or any of those other golden age authors' books. Just never got around to it. So I don't know how faithful an adaptation the movie is, but I can say this: the movie made me actually give serious consideration to picking them up. Now, about the movie itself. (before I get into anything specific.. I, like many people, watched the trailers and felt a very strong 'Star Wars: Attack of the Clones' vibe from them. Some of the imagery looked very similar. I am happy to report, however, that there is absolutely ZERO 'Attack of the Clones' vibe in the movie itself. I believe this is because Andrew Stanton is actually a good director, and George Lucas is an arrogant brain-dead hack) Right off the bat, from the very first moment of the film, you get that wonderful 'old-school Disney' vibe, which means an immersive, detailed world, with real acting taking place even in the bit roles. (spoilered from here on - don't read if you don't want spoilers) Spoiler The beginning is set-up, first telling a brief history of the situation on Mars, the two nations long at war, holding each other at bay until some otherworldly interference pushes one faction over the top, seemingly forcing the entire planet toward doom. Then we jump to Earth, in the late 1800's, and see more set-up, this time preparing us for a story told as one massively long flashback. It is all extremely clever, it pays off in the end, and you can see clearly how the pieces fit together once everything falls into place. Essentially, for those of you who do not know, John Carter is an ex-confederate soldier, carrying the heavy weight of pain from the loss of his wife and young child, and has withdrawn from life to seek gold in the wilderness. Through a series of mishaps, he manages to stumble upon a secret location which was used by otherworldly aliens to travel between worlds, and from there manages to accidentally transport himself to Mars. While he is discovering his new ability to leap large distances, and his new enormous strength (presumably because of the differences between Earth's and Mars' gravity), he is captured by a band of aliens known as the Tharks - led by Tars Tarkas, portrayed and voiced wonderfully by Willem Dafoe. (Speaking of the acting - I was never particularly fond of Taylor Kitsch when I had seen him before. In that really bad Wolverine movie, he was *ok*, but nothing about him was memorable to me. And seeing him in the previews as the star of John Carter, well, it was not a good sign. However, he did a fine job in this movie, he pulled it off and carried the film as well as any 'established a-list star could have done, so reast easy on that point) It is at this point that John Carter explains to Tars Tarkas that he is 'from Virginia', which amusingly leads the Tharks to call him Virginia for much of the remainder of the movie. I am not going to go into great detail about the whole movie here. Just some bullet points from here on: There is an evil bad guy wanna-be Emperor of Mars, who has been granted great destructive power by the alien meddlers. There is a beautiful scientific genius princess who is forced to marry the evil bad guy. There are escapes, rescues, wild battles, flying battleships.. There is a freaking *WALKING CITY* for crying out loud, which is amazingly realized. There are some geuinely funny parts. There are lots of ancient-Rome themes, lots of gladiators, tattoos, and midriff-baring warrior costumes of tight-abbed womens All very old-school, lovingly retro. Also, and I mean this in all seriousness, absolutely the funniest head-slap you have ever seen. You will know it when you see it. And a... dog..? Sort of a cross between Speedy Gonzales and a giant bulldog with a huge pigs-butt for a face.. lol but he was awesome. I want one. Now. Was the movie perfect? No. Some important dialog was lost in noisy moments, and some character actions and motivations are not as clear as they should have been. I suspect those are things which came about as a result of having to leave some things on the cutting-room floor. Like PotC, it is not short, and it can drag in some spots. I have seen some people writing reviews annouce things like 'it sucks' or 'I only give it 5/10' because of these very few shortcomings, which is a terrible disservice. The film is honestly a ton of fun. Even my son, who is getting to that age where he hates everything, and who did not even want to go see it because he saw the previews and said 'The looks stupid'.. even he loved it and could not stop talking about it for the rest of the night. It is crystal clear from the ending that more John Carter movies will be on the way. And that is a good thing. This is not dead in the water like Prince of Persia. Rejoice for that. Now I will say this last thing: there is absolutely no reason to spend extra to see this in 3D. Don't. Save yourself the money and just see it in the regular number of D's. The 3D added nothing, so don't bother. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
3.5/5 Finish watching this movie on netflix and I can understand many of the bad reviews that I have read surrounding this film. Many have refered to this movie as a typical hood film and it is; but at a level that captures the realm of economic prosperity (due to the crack-cocaine epidemic) that saturated ghettos everywhere. It opened the project doors and windows for America to see. It was based upon a true story which got me entice to this movie from the start, and presented cameo of each of the 3 actual hustlers (drug-dealers)that conquered Harlem in the mid 80's. In order to really be able to appreicate the film at a height, I think that it is beneficial to have some knowledge of that time period ... and maybe even some knowledge of the hood. Too me this ranks up there with boys in the hood and menace to society. They also have this movie uploaded to youtube <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/BZUDdwBBdhs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Feds interview articles to whomever want to read it after seeing it http://www.angelfire.com/nc3/kaybroadnax/
It was pretty good, it's not 300, but it's art direction is different the fight scenes were quite fantastic, worth it
It's not terrible, worth renting. Wish I didn't pay to see it in the theater. 300 was wayyy better. Fight scenes were cool, but other than that, not much to say.
Oh for the love of everything sacred, do NOT watch this piece of crap. I came out really pissed for having supported this movie via purchasing a ticket. This movie deserves nothing more than being pirated. The visuals are nothing special, you've seen it all. Everything else was complete and utter schitte. I'd rather watch the Jazz win a championship than this again.
Revolver: 9.7/10 One of the most genius and thought out movies i have ever seen. Philosophically enhancing and psychologically incredible. A must watch and the acting was superb! Might go out and say this is the best performance from Jason Statham. I still cannot stop thinking about it, wish it would have gotten more recognition. Inception ain't got anything on how complicated and confusing this film was. Anyone seen it?
