If he's in a trade without Lowry, we win - full stop. I don't like Gasol but he's a premium asset, and opportunities to get those for a collection of non-premium assets are very rare. Martins and Scolas can be picked up through clever GMing - Gasols are much, much harder.

Losing Kyle makes us worse team in the long haul. Flynn is the backup point is not ideal.

Totally agree. if the Rockets acquire Gasol without giving a bluechip asset in return then Morey is the winner and Kupchak the loser.

Just like Simmons said to day in his piece on the most valuable assets and I've said words to this effect myself during these many Gasol trade threads...

"If we've learned anything from NBA history, it's that you should always be extremely wary about trading a blue-chipper without getting a blue-chipper back."

I'll be surprised if Kupchak has forgotten that lesson considering the number of years he spent with Jerry West. But perhaps others are right and the new generation of Buss's are persisting towards salary dumping the highest paid players as soon as possible.

    we'll know soon enough

    Lowry is valued because:
    1. He seems to have not peaked yet (this, like anything about potential, of course is no guarantee).
    2. He is young.
    3. He has a cheap contract for a couple more years.
    4. Without him our PG position would be weak.

Gasol is clearly a better player now, but
    1. He has clearly peaked.
    2. He is 31 years old.
    3. He has an expensive contract.
    4. Our PF position already has a good young guy in Patterson.

If we trade Lowry (and some other pieces) for Gasol, we are looking at perhaps a #5 or #6 playoffs spot in the next two years and then when he declines, we go back to #8 or #9. Is it really worth it? Of course, if we can make an addition deal to make us a contendeer, that's another story.

The bottomline, trading Lowry for Gasol won't make us a contender.

If Gasol is traded to the Rockets without Lowry involved. What's in it for the Lakers?

So it'd make more sense if the Rockets helped the Lakers facilitate a Pau trade to somewhere else where the Rockets get back a lesser player? :p

Just heard on the radio on the Laker station that a trade is pending for Gasol in exchange for Scola and Lowry

Let me count some of the ways that's impossible.

Kobe is one of two players in the league with a no trade clause without approval.

Kobe's salary is now in excess of $25M a season.

He's chasing the all-time scoring record in the league over the next several years which the franchise will want to covet especially in the early stages of a gigantic cable television contract worth billions.

The only Laker superstar in history to have EVER been traded prior to retiring a Laker (Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chaimberlain, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Magic Johnson, James Worthy) was Shaq O'Neal which with every passing year he grudgingly admits that he regrets forcing Laker management to trade him. And of course, it's expected Kobe will be added to the list.

IF we can get Gasol for just Scola and Lowry.. I would do that in a heart beat. We will make the playoffs this year, sure we won't go far, but bring in Llull next year or sign DWill; then all of a sudden we are top 4 in the West.

Martin will stop crying about trades to be, we have decent outside shooters and decent defenders. Dally and Gasol and clog the paint. It will be nice to see that.

Morey on the other hand will want Howard here also. Could you imagine a Howard and Gasol front court with Llull here next year? Watch out.
