Well we all know that the Rockets are in the running for "renting" Howard. I personally am all for it and would even give up lowry for the chance to get him. I am beginning to wonder if the reason for hiring McHale were for situations such as this. If I were a dominant big like Howard I'd be much more enticed to play for one of the best big men in the game than ur run of the mill coach. I think it is safe to say that McHale isn't the best coach in terms of x's and o's but he might have a hidden quality that most of us never thought about........attracting FA specifically big men.
From Dwight's perspective it would be a definite + to have a hall of famer like McHale on the staff. However, I don't think having mchale would turn Dwight away from a place New Jersey. In New Jersey, he would be the man in a franchise with all of the spotlight with the upcoming relocation. Don't think we can top that unfortunately :'(
I would say Mchale as his coach doesn't rank very high in his list of criteria to sign with a team... 1. MAX MONEY 2. Number 1 guy. Has no interest in playing second fiddle to Kobe. 3. Winning, wants a franchise that can win or at least has potential to win 4. Big city venue 5. Has a great arena 6. Cool owner 7. Xbox in locker 8. Personal Masseuse 9, 10, 11,......... 289. McHale is the coach
Just don't mention Kevin Martin to them because we used T-Mac to get him and that will remind them of the Francis trade....which didn't pan out too well for them. I don't think we have a shot at Howard at all to be honest. The Magic want a star player in return. I can see the Clippers jumping in at the last second and swooping Howard from us right before the trade is submitted by throwing Griffin on the table.
He already considers himself one of, if not the best big man in the league. Do you think he really believes another big man, besides Dream, can teach him something he doesn't already know. Doesn't seem like that would entice him much to me imho.
If Dwight had McHale's post moves he'd be unstoppable. He'd love the chance to work with him everyday. Problem is he would get his 6 weeks of rental then take those talents he learned to another city
I seriously doubt that Dwight thinks he is beyond whatever McHale could teach him. He could def improve his game in the post and you can never have too many moves in your arsenal.
The same thought crossed my mind just yesterday. I doubt it will have any affect on Dwight's decision though. I would be completely surprised to see Dwight in a Rocket's uniform this season or next.
Who know what's going on in Dwight's head. I would think working with quality people in general would be a factor, but I don't see the availability of a HOF center over some other quality person makes much of a difference. I think we'd get roughly the same effect with Rick Adelman. And, it'd only matter vis-a-vis another team with a notable lack of quality coaching -- like Washington, or something.
If Dwight Howard cared that much for basketball he would have already developed a post game. As good as he is, he doesn't seem to have that BURNING desire to win, like Dream and other greats did/do. Dwight seems to be more along with the new generation of wanting to be a celebrity more than win basketball games. A very sad trend for us old time fans. DD
^ I concur with your assessment of Dwight, but don't think it has anything to do with his post game. I am positive he's put in the time on the practice court to develop a better post game. The reason he hasn't is because he can't. It doesn't matter how much I practice, I'll never be an NBA player. It doesn't matter how much Dwight practices, he'll never be Hakeem, Shaq, Duncan, etc. in the post. I do still think his post game is underrated, though. I've seen him with some pretty sick post moves. For whatever reason, though, it's not 100% consistent. I'm going to attribute some of this to system and coaching. That said, you never stop learning. He can always pick up a few tricks here or there.... but it's hard to see his game meaningfully changing in the future.
Probably true. Looks like his ceiling is Patrick Ewing. That's not bad, though, especially in today's NBA.
He's already a better defender than ewing ever was......but he will never be the type of offensive player ewing, robinson were.
No he isn't. There just aren't many centers in the league to expose his man-to-man defense. Great help defender though.
the rules make help defense far more important than man to man at the C spot, heck if those rules had run through the 90's, dream would have won dpoy after dpoy until deke matured.
