Texans running back Arian Foster said today his new $43.5 million contract won’t affect his preparation or his performance.

Foster signed his five-year contract that includes $20.75 million in guarantees, a $12.5 million signing bonus and a base salary this season of $5 million.

“I have a huge obligation to my teammates and coaches, the organization and the fans who have supported me,” Foster said at a news conference in Reliant Stadium. “I’m excited and grateful, but it’s not going to affect the way I approach the game.

“I go into every season feeling like I have something to prove. What happened last season doesn’t matter, but I will admit this takes the pressure off.”

Foster, who turns 26 in August, has come a long way since he went undrafted and the Texans signed him to a two-year contract to keep him away from New Orleans and the New York Jets.

“At first, I just wanted to make the team,” he said. “Then, I wanted to be the best special teams player on the field.

“I’ve always had goals, but I’ve never played for a pay day. That’s why I never complained (about being paid the minimum in each of his first three seasons).

“I’m very thankful the organization reached out to me because they didn’t have to. They still had my rights.”

Foster would have been a restricted free agent. The Texans could have kept him if they matched an offer from another team. They also could have used the franchise designation on him, meaning he would have made $7.7 million this season.

Foster broke down and had to regain his composure when answering a question about the lowest point of his life. He told a story about his mother, Bernadette, having to pawn her wedding ring to feed her children.

Now, his mother has a special gift her son had promised her.

“When I was 7 or 8, I told my mother I was going to play in the NFL,” he said. “I told everybody in my family. I told each of them what I was going to buy them when I made it in the NFL.

“But I forgot to tell my mother. I left her out. When she would ask me, I’d tell her I was going to buy her a fruit basket. She used to ask me where her fruit basket was. Well, that fruit basket is on its way (to Albuquerque, N.M.), and she should be getting it later today.”

Foster praised his offensive line and said he hoped the Texans could re-sign center Chris Myers and right guard Mike Brisiel, both of whom will be unrestricted next week if they don’t sign new contracts.

“We have the best offensive line in the NFL,” he said.

Foster rushed for 1,616 yards and scored 18 touchdowns in 2010, his first season as a starter. Despite missing almost four games last season, he ran for 1,224 yards, caught 53 passes and scored 12 touchdowns. In a playoff victory over Cincinnati and a loss at Baltimore, he ran for 285 yards and three touchdowns.

“It’s not what you do when people are watching; it’s what you do when they’re not watching,” Foster said. “I’m going to continue to work as hard as I can to be the best I can be.

“You can only do this once, and you can’t do it forever. I want to do as well as I can for as long as I can.”

I can hear that podcast all day.

I recall when the talkingheads in town, around 2009, were saying we had such a bland mix of players with no personalities. The entire roster is so talented and each one has their own awesomeness trait. Arian the philosophizer, Cody the comedian, crazy eight, the ninja, barwin. All of these kids are great.

If Andre Johnson is the first to get his jersey retired, Arian should be the second. In terms of class, professionalism, talent...they're like the Texans' own Killer Bees.

He seemed pretty genuine. I am glad he got paid. Too many players get screwed by the NFL like matt forte.

I wonder if the Bears offered Forte something like Foster's contract, would he accept it? Or hold out for more? The whole "I need to get paid" attitude really hurts negotiations.

RBs need to realize if they don't hold out for exorbitant amounts, teams are a lot more likely to work with them. Perhaps ask for $45m instead of $55m.

That being said, Chicago is probably also being a d******d to Forte.

That press conference should be one of those Houston sports history moments. Foster is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite htown sports icons.
