Houston doesn't get enough tourists to have any tourist traps. It's more of a suburban-family-taking-kids-to-the-city trap.
I'd advise an early April trip: Rockets game at Toyota Center Astros game at MMP Dynamo aren't home until May Look at the theater District shows to see if something grabs you. Ditto House of Blues or Continental Club or other music venue Catch a fun showing at Alamo Drafthouse (West Oaks Mall) Lupe Tortilla is an absolute; beef fajitas. Breakfast Klub in midtown. Ocean Palace is good. Jus' Mac and Petrol Station (West Heights area) are both cool low key places Stroll the Galleria Do check out the new downtown during a weekend day - it's changed tremendously in the past decade. Houston has plenty to do, but it's more about the events and places to eat.
liveD? I used to live there too. I prefer Houston though because everything is so close to you (food, movies, mall etc.)
If you haven't been home in years, check out Sugar Land Town Center...that whole area has grown tremendously. Hit up the Flying Saucer for all the beer you can handle. Check out a Skeeters game, their new minor league baseball team. You can see the Dynamo play in their new home. if you're an active, outdoor person, check out Brazos Bend SP, Memorial Park, Herman Park, Texas Rock Gym. Museum District, Galleria, Houston Zoo, Kemah are good tourist areas.
A lot of go to the discovery green park near George r brown center, supposed to be nice. I know there are bus tours that take you to historic places and Infotain your ass; there is also some tours that take you to haunted places in downtown/midtown. If you like fishing, hiking, nature trails go to lake conroe exist 102 (new waverly), Sam Houston national park. Also, some parts of lake Houston are nice. Go to a flea market, those are full of thrills and trills...also enjoy gas at lower prices
Eat at hole-in-the-wall kind of places..Houston is loaded with these kind of eateries >M&M Grill on Almeda -- double loaded cheeseburger Spend a day and chill at Hermann Park, walk around the museum district and stuff Go to a live music performance! Sip drank, look at the skyline, maybe take a trip to Galveston if you want
When I take vacations, I like to "live like the locals". so for your trip, I would suggest: 1. Friday 5pm -- Drive from downtown, up 290 to Fairfield. Experience a true Houston traffic jam 2. Saturday, 11am -- hit the Galleria. Circle the Nordstrom's parking lot for 30 minutes looking for a space. 3. Experience true "no Houston zoning" by stopping by the "Zone d'Erotique", conveniently situated next to the largest shopping mall in the state (where families go to shop!) 4. Check out the Kemah Boardwalk to get the best of Houston cooking: Landry's restaurants 5. Live life on the wild side -- by shopping at the Dunvale Walmart and hoping your car's still there when you come out 6. Get some exercise -- have your tour guide drop you off in the 3rd ward, wearing your brand new Jordan sneakers -- exhilarating wind sprints should ensue just some thoughts to get you started
Check the OP, brah. Also, are there any other specific areas in Houston that I should avoid? So far it seems like the wards are off-limits.
I'd visit them. Drive through and see the innards of H-Town. don't be a pansy tourist... see the roots of the city
For me, short of the frescos (now gone) the art largely went from bad to worse. But then I'm an uncultured oaf.
This is the funniest post I read all day. Everything around that Walmart on Dunvale (theater, restaurants, not the apartment complexes) I actually like. Weird how they have some nice places in that area, just the Walmart alone sucks.
