In your opinion, what is the greatest song ever created?
In my opinion, it is Bohemian Rhapsody. Thoughts...

    How do you define song?

    Beethoven's 9th is my choice.

Led Zeppelin - All My Love

Great song. I love the mandolin solo and the trumpet that goes along with it, and not to forget the great chords of the synthetic strings in the background. Robert Plant does an excellent job on the chorus! Great emotion displayed by Plant; you can tell he really felt the lyrics. One of my personal favorites.

The last movement has a choir and has text. I don't see why it can't be considered a song.

Danny Boy is pretty great. Not sure if it can compare with Beethoven.

Probably Layla is up there, maybe Beethoven's 5th, Ride of the Valkyries, A Day in the Life, Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Desolation Row- just too many to choose from.

My vote is for Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick. 44-minute song- can't top that!!

Nice choice. I have to say though, there other Symphonies as well as many other pieces written by Beethoven I like more. I really like some of his Sonatas, namely Appassionata. On musicality alone, I would have to say Grosse Fuge was his best work IMO. Having said that, there has been a lot of development in music during the past 200 years......

Yes, Beethoven was genius for his time, but he produced music in the early 19th century. That style of harmony and counterpoint, and to a greater extent, artistic aesthetic has become very been dated. There have been many, many brilliant minds since then, who have changed the course of music in an equally profound way, all looking toward the future just as Beethoven had done.

Ligeti, Schoenberg, Stravinski, Stockhausen, Ives, Milton Babbit, Prokofiev, Bartok, Liszt, Varese, Olivier Messiaen, even someone like Sarobji or great jazz minds like Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bill Evans. Just to name a few. The list is HUGE.

Beethoven's music will be timeless, however many composers of the 20th and 21st centuries will one day be in the same discussion as him. It's only a matter of time. At one point, Beethoven's symphonies were described as noise. It took over a century to actually discover Bach's music. Van Gogh couldn't sell anything during his lifetime. Now a painting of his could go for 20 million. Thats just the way of the world and the plight of true genius.

You just hit three of my favorites right there, buddy. Rep for you.

I would add Jean Sibelius and Hector Berlioz.

Easily the most beautiful, yet haunting song ever created. I love it so much it is ridiculous.

I'm not sure if I'd call it the best, but this is certainly my favorite song of all time

I think one has to be very shallow and single minded to be able to crown something as the "best song ever created"

I've always been a fan of Dvořák's New World Symphony, particularly the 2nd movement. I want that played at my funeral.
