I've been watching a lot of local broadcasts of a lot of different teams this year and imo, Bullard is among the best and clyde along with scott hastings in denver are the 2 absolute worst
Its time for him to go. For a replacement, I'll accept Bullard full time or Calvin. JVG would be the best of all but too much to hope for.
I think a good commentator needs the following qualities: 1) Knowledge and insight into the game. If they can point out things that the casual fan won't notice, then it makes the game more interesting for everyone to watch. I don't need them to say what I'm thinking out loud. That is completely useless. Clyde is pretty bad in this regard, and Matt is average. 2) Relatively unbiased commentary. Sure, the commentators are going to speak more about the Rockets in general because they are talking to the fans of the Rockets, who have a vested interested in one side of the game. That said, I don't need them yelling that "it wasn't a foul". I cite Sean Elliot as the dorkiest homer in BB, and Tommy Heinsohn as the rudest homer. Unfortunately, Matt Bullard is pretty bad about this. Clyde has a good perspective on this and will complement the opposition when deserved and criticize the Rockets when deserved. 3) Sense of humor. A good commentator needs to be able to speak and laugh a little. Neither Matt or Clyde is any good here. 4) Confidence. Matt is the worst here, constantly seeking out approval and praise. Clyde has nothing to prove. It is good to hear someone that is relaxed, doesn't have an inferiority complex, and doesn't verbally attack the opposition without reason. 5) The intangibles.... if you are REALLY GREAT at something, or you have a distinctive and interesting personality that comes through in your broadcast, then that is bonus. Calvin Murphy deserves the job. He has it all. After watching League Pass and hearing other sides, the Jazz, Celtics, and Spurs have the worst (although Jazz have improved DRAMATICALLY with Harpring in booth, so this comment may be inaccurate now). Rockets (with Murphy) and New York have the best.
its pretty evident in away games Air Bull does his research and always has interesting facts about the game and matchups. keep up the good job Bull, fans do notice
Paul makes 2-point shot.... Clyde: That's what makes him C.P.3. nope clyde, his initials and his jersey # are actually what makes him CP3.
Bill: The Rockets are 6-1 in games decided by 5 points or less? Does that surprise you Clyde? Clyde: Nope, because the Rockets win a lot of close games.
