The Samsung Galaxy S III Leaked!

My phone is a lower clocked dual core (Galaxy Nexus @ 1.2ghz), and I don't have any issues with the speed performance. The only problems I have are battery life. So to answer your question; no I don't really think quad core phones are necessary. With that said, that's just how these spec races go. The chips are becoming smaller, faster, cheaper, and generally consumers win.

 

Aren't the newer chips more energy efficient as well?

 

Yes. With that said, more efficient doesn't necessarily mean it takes up less power over all. It just means it's more efficient per core for example than the previous technology. It could be "more efficient" and still take up 2 times as much power truthfully.

Also I'd say the bigger power draw right now is screens. You'd think they'd have made more advances in battery technology...Samsung claims it's focusing in on that this year, we'll see.

 

Yup, I want to see new battery technology, not more cores. At least on the VZW Nexus, the biggest battery hog is the screen and LTE radio. Only way to get decent battery life nowadays is to stick a 3300mah battery in a phone it seems. I have the 2100mah extended battery and it still isn't what I expect. I get about 17 hours or so a day (4 hour screen on time) .

However, that's because I'm using a modified kernel which reduces the wakelocks and use a different governor and scheduler for my processor along with a bunch of Omap 4460 patches. I run my phone at 1.35 ghz too so I could probably bump it down a notch. The average consumer shouldn't have to do any of that, at all. That's the problem.

Oh, and on that note. Is anyone else still unimpressed with what HTC has to offer? They're still putting tiny batteries in phones, and that Super LCD screen display is unattractive IMO and wastes more battery than Amoled

 

So far the padfone is the only thing I've been impressed by. I geeked out with the stylus/headset. I didn't see that one coming. Battery is pretty small in the phone though but you do have quite the resources to keep it charged up with the tablet battery and the keyboard battery.

 

I'm not. I'll never touch a HTC phone after working for Verizon.
All their phones are ugly / look the same, and they seem to care less about battery life than any other major smartphone manufacturer -- among other things.

 

Haha. I agree, and I absolutely can't stand how they put their power buttons on the top right. Especially on their bigger phones like the Titan, it drives me insane. HTC supposedly said that this year would be better for them, but after what they have shown at MWC, that's clearly not the case. Only HTC phone I've ever really enjoyed was the Nexus One and HTC Incredible. The Thunderbolt was the worst phone I ever owned, I think it was the LTE that excited me more than the actual phone itself lol.

 

I agree across the board. When the Nexus One and Incredible came out I was all over them. They've declined extremely rapidly. I still think the Incredible is arguably their best looking phone, and one of the better looking phones to this day.

 

I still use the INC to this day as an alternative media device for whenever I forget to charge the Galaxy Player. Hell, it even runs ICS nicely. Honestly, I miss having a phone that could fit in the palm of your hand like that. That's one of the things I actually enjoyed about the iPhone. I love my Nexus, but would love a high end phone that was around 4.0 inches and actually had a decent battery life. Probably too much to ask for though considering battery technology hasn't evolved at all, and good battery life on LTE just means sticking a bigger battery in a phone

 

I am actually fairly impressed by the HTC One showing. I am more excited about the One S than the One X though.

I believe they'll be the first one to market with the Qualcomm S4 processor which will be the first of the 'next generation' processor this year. The S4 CPU looks very impressive (the GPU less so) from a few published benchmarks.

I am also very very excited about the camera. Super fast start time, focus time, bigger aperture, continuous shooting, simultaneous video and stills (my favorite feature), and improved HDR? SIGN ME UP.

Many mini-reviews from MWC also noted that the One S is possibly one of the most solid feeling phone ever with the new oxidized aluminum casing material. With the phone so thin (7.9mm compared IP4s 9.3mm and Galaxy S2 8.49mm), the non-removable battery design was probably due to structural reasons.

Battery life is a (big) concern, but hopefully the 28nm processor will mitigate that somewhat. I just need the phone to last one day of charge then I'll be happy.

With that said, I won't be buying a new phone until I see what the S III have up its sleeve. Samsung just always manages to impress.

 

There was nothing in the article about 1080p. I think the OP just inferred that from the "Blu Ray" mention. It makes no sense at all to put 1080p on a phone display that size - it is visually indistinguishable from 720p.
