He turned down a 4 year 50 mil deal. If you ask me thats a very fair price for gordon, he obviously turned it down because he doesn't want to waist his whole career in the rebuilding stage with the hornets. The should know this and should be open to trade him.

If we can come out of this with some big-a$$ money in the summer and rebuild, even if it means re-signing Kaman to a more reasonable deal (if he's healthy), then, yeah, go for it.

Especially if we can part with Martin, whose brain or body just isn't letting him play well lately.

    Gordon's a possibility, maybe, but he ain't's gowanns 2 B cheap. That'd be a small backcourt.

Maybe if we can acquire more/better draft picks (more T-Will regret, sigh) we could offer New Orleans a cocktail of picks and cheap youngs for Gordon. Not counting on it though.

What I don't get is why New Orleans isn't trying to get rid of that Okafur contract...

Or start Kaman next to Sam and bring Scola off the bench. I'm sure it wouldn't be the popular choice here but Kaman brings the low post game we've been lacking this year.

Scola is just not cutting it.

    Exactly.

They want to sell the team. Why part with a $13,000,000 contract coming off the books? It's tough to match that with 13 million in expirings; unless Indiana swoops in with its cap space.

Because Stern is running the show and is being incredibly hardheaded and unrealistic. He's determined to sell the team to someone that will keep it in NO, despite the fact that the area has been a flop since he first moved them over (well before Katrina). He wants the team to attract fans to the games to demonstrate a local revenue base (that isn't really there).

Stern point blank declared that there would be no fire sale. If they did clear out the roster, the building would be empty, and no investor would want to touch the team if it meant staying there - it would be like buying the Nets with the condition that they stay in Newark.

They're 26th in attendance this year - 19th if you stick to percentage of seats sold. Last year (26th/18th), the year before (23rd/18th). Hornets have been a dreadful draw in Louisiana, even with the team pulling Enron-esque double counting tricks to fluff up the numbers.

I personally consider the Hornets to be the darkest stain on Stern's legacy, after officiating. He crippled the franchise when he moved them from Charlotte, wrongly siding with Shinn and immediately giving them the Bobcats as an apology. Shinn was desperate to stay in OKC post-Katrina, but Stern forced them back to soak in the PR. It is a cold, bitter truth, but Stern's moves crippled Charlotte and Seattle as NBA cities, ruined the Hornets as a franchise, and the Bobcats were stillborn.

So Stern continues to botch things. Seeing as Martin and Scola weren't going to hold the sulky protest that Gordon and Kaman have, he messed up vetoing the initial Paul trade (of course, it was more important to him to blackball Paul from a flagship team). And in reality, with the Hornets clearly unable to play watchable basketball, he absolutely should have emptied out the roster for draft picks and gone into the summer with a franchise free of payroll (debt) and ready for a brand new identity with a flux of 2012 Draft Class players.

And if that new owner STILL doesn't come forward this summer? Emptying out the roster makes it that much easier to fold the franchise.

Well said and I agree with your assessment of Stern. I think he's wrong that avoiding a fire sale is the way to sell the team though. The more money he can get off the books and the more space he can give an incoming owner to work, the more likely he will be to sell the franchise. Billionaires don't buy sports teams for the money, they buy them because they want to own a sports team and put their fingerprints on its direction.

    emjohn and orekLK,

Those last two posts (#30, #31) were excellent.

Still, if Morey wants Kaman, I hope he can be had for our 09 suckwads and a 2nd rounder. Maybe if Morey had some good chantagem (Portuguese for "blackmail") action on Stern after the Pau debacle.

    Ditto on emjohn's post.

Well, we've been working towards THIS deadline/upcoming free agency for sometime now. Obviously, the first choice for DM is Howard and Williams....But barring that longshot coming in, we are still where we want to be. There's no need to lose our heads and reach for a window or talent. Morey has been patient and it's about to pay off.
This deal with Gordon/Caveman, if it goes down ....is a tremendous move...It yields an all star talent in Gordon (who is exp & could be resigned) and gives us quality size in the middle with Kaman (and more importantly an expiring contract).
We let go Martin and Scola where we're locked into big salaries and give up the Knicks 1.
In the end, we retain our flexibilty to be major players in FA.
For those that are underrating Gordon - just wait

I notice Dragic isn't in this deal. That's a good thing, both because of his talent as a Rocket.(though he's expiring), and the ability to flip him in another move.

THIS COULD BE THE MAKE - UP CALL.

Anyway, it's my hope that Les doesn't force things ....as time (and DM) is on our side.

Gordon isn't healthy, he's had arthroscopic surgery on his knee.

If we're going for it in the short term, Bogut is one of the few guys that I could get my mind around. If he could stay healthy(sound familiar?), then we might be able to actually get "there".... a true window. He HAS been injured a lot in his career, but these aren't the kind that seem to linger/hamper once healed. Andrew crashes the boards and defends the paint like nobody's business +.

Still, is this the kind of downside risk we should be associating ourselves with?

In order, which center would you want:
    Pekovic, Gortat, Kaman or Dally?
