It goes from 13-18 in Europe, depending on each country. Boinking a student is illegal here and will lead to the teacher getting fired and he can also face jail time.

Oh ya and at an early age the frontal lObe isn't fully developed thus hindering higher level thinking, processing and judgement so if the relationship started when she was 15 she totally got taken advantage of and basically got brainwashed. That's like preying on helpless ppl and or doing research before doing a perfect crime. He should be punished and if they find anything premeditated he should be behind bars.
As a high school teacher, I'm really shocked by stories like this. Not so much the stories of the creepy older teacher having an illicit sexual affair with a student...but that a serious relationship can develop between an older teacher and a student. There's no doubt in my mind that this teacher was harboring feelings for the student while she was still in school. In my mind, that's totally unacceptable. As a teacher, you're charged with keeping your students safe and teaching them your subject area. Romantic or sexual feelings are going to prevent you from doing your job, no matter what. That the teacher not only had those feelings, but allowed them to develop and then eventually pursued them...that's unacceptable. Yes, she's graduated and he resigned, but still. Yuck.
I don't, but I do know that there is a significant difference in power between teachers and students. Teachers have authority and respect within a school simply because they are teachers. In a romantic relationship, especially one with a large age gap, power is important, and it can be corruptive.
He is mentally and emotionally weak and/or had a terrible marriage to leave it to move in with an 18 year old who will either (a) grow up one day, possibly soon, and realize that this was just an infatuation or (b) also has mental/emotional issues and will never be able to make much of herself.
