Transition 3s have been a big part of the Rockets offense for the past few years. We shoot a lot of them and last year we were making a lot of them.

However, this year that has changed.

    Via SBNation

The average number of transition 3s 76 per game and the average shooting percentage is 35.2%.

Kyle Lowry is the worst in the NBA at transition 3s (outta players who shoot a lot) at 3 - 18.

Kevin Martin has shot the 4th most 3s in transition and has made about 38% of them which is quite good.

Do you guys think we should cut down on the transition 3s?

Your stats suggest that Lowry should stop and Martin should not.

It all depends on if the fast break can lead to a clear cut dunk or layup. If you can have a guaranteed 2, then obviously you do not take a 3. If the defenders are back and protecting the paint then i have no problem with attempting a 3.

btw: based on the stats, this means the Rockets are shooting 36.3% on non-transition 3s.

I'd say, keep shooting the transition 3s (while giving a nod to OlajuwonFan81's quote for truth), since we don't have a superstar or great low post game. It could be the best shot of the possession. If we did have a stellar half-court set option, then maybe wait more to setup.

I don't recall Lowry shooting any transition threes except for 2-1 situations at the end of the quarters.

The reason why the Rockets shot so many transition 3's is because RA was the the coach and that was part of the RA's offense based on the Princeton and the corner offense. Because there was no Yao over the last couple of years the Rockets had to rely on pushing the ball before the D set up, when there wasn't a a dominante inside presence. Martin should keep on shooting it because thats what he's always done in Sac and in Houston. Lowry should work on his 3's more and should chill on them until he starts hitting. KM's offense isn't as pretty as RA's.

Lowry is shooting 39% this year from 3. If you subtract his transition 3s (3-18), he is shooting 41.3%. Obviously, this is a glitch...probably the primary glitch in why the Rockets are 27% in transition and 36% in half court.

Lowry is probably launching at the buzzer more than others and, as jaybiddyforreal suggests, maybe some of his 18 shots are in 2 for 1, as well.

Lowry Transition threes are like 10 feet behind three point line

I'm pretty sure end of quarter 3s do not count on synergy sports.

    since he's only attempted 18 it's about 1 every 2nd game.

Do end of quarter heaves count as transition 3s?

Right, but the ones where he brings it across halfcourt with 35 seconds left and immediately launches in order to get 2 shots...that would count. Which is what people are saying.

I'm not a huge fan of the transition three in situations where you have no rebounders under the rim and any miss is an automatic possession for the opposing team. Offensive rebounds count for over 1/3 of our team rebounds--having a near 0% chance to get one of them is a tangible hit to the value of the possession.

It's funny, but true. He makes those a lot though. And in the 4th he's nails from the 3pt line.

I hate the shot, I guess I'm just old school. I think the transition 3 is the reason we see so many blown fast break atts. Guys are so use to stopping and shooting vs filling the break and leting the trailer shoot it or finish. In the case with martin, his shot comes at the expense of leaving early before the rebound is secure.

So many of the Rockets blow layups, that I think I'm okay with the transition 3-pointer for this team.

I wouldnt mind it we had athletic wings and bigs who can run down and crash offensive boards every now and then. T-Will/Bud and Hill are our most athletic wings and bigs and they suck a$$

As long as it isnt a contested, running 3 I'm ok with it.

If Lowry goes to the hole and is getting swamped and kicks it out to Martin for a set shot, then I'm all good.
