.... For the best BBQ in America. As if we didn't know this. http://travel.usnews.com/features/Americas_Best_BBQ_Cities/
east coaster so I don't have a dog in this fight, but I think it's kind of stupid to try to rank memphis vs. carolina vs. kc vs. texas BBQ against each other.
For an "east coaster", you make a lotta sense. Texas, Carolinas, Memphis, and KC each have their own preferred meats and types of sauces.

So a city of over 660,000 with over 80 BBQ restaurants beat a town with 11,600 people and 4 BBQ restaurants by 1 rank...congrats? Of course, Austin is also on the list...so I'd say that means Central Texas was better represented than Tennessee, wouldn't you?
Pulled pork is good, but the first time a cooked a Boston Butt, it was superb. Then again, I cut my teeth on smoking briskets. If you can smoke a halfway decent brisket, you can probably make better pulled pork than half of those Memphis joints.
QFMFT. Smoking a great brisket is hard. Mastering it is the pinnacle of barbecue. Pulled pork is bunny slopes to brisket's double black diamonds.
I'd like to try some Memphis BBQ, but I'm really not a big fan of being MURDERED. Ghetto/Flyover city.
i grew up with texas bbq and it is my preference, however, memphis has some damned tasty food--> but yes, it's a bit of a war zone.
My first experience with supposedly "legendary" Memphis BBQ was bleh.... Charlie Vergos' Rendevous. The ribs weren't really even "bbq ribs"... they were dry/overcooked. Sauce was pretty decent. I'm going to try going up there for Memphis in May (hopefully) and check out other places. I can't imagine the Pig on Beale is their best example of Memphis BBQ, though. I've always heard that place got above-average reviews at best. I also can't get used to the idea of spaghetti with bbq sauce.... lol. Gus' World Famous Fried Chicken in Memphis is probably one of the 2 or 3 best fried chicken I've tried, though.
try germantown commissary. Also interstate BBQ is by far the best. Rendevous can be hit or miss. also if you've never been to memphis in may, understand 1 thing: rain. We get it every year, so come prepared.
Where is Memphis on this list..... http://shine.yahoo.com/shine-food/20-best-restaurants-america-231000002.html
I don't understand the first sentence of the article... When is the time that isn't bbq season? I don't think I want to be awake for that.
