it's also worth mentioning that we don't have a superstar to attract big name talent as well. If your city isn't a giant market or a destination city like Miami, you better have a franchise player like Dirk. Now if you have neither a franchise player, or a big market, or a desirable destination ...you take a page out of OKC's book, and build through the draft. Unfortunately, our management and ownership (with best intentions i'm sure) are chasing fools gold, when they should be building something ment to last.
I can see all teams going for that type of trade. curious what "blockbuster deal happening" means? you have some insider tips? Rockets fans should be pretty happy if this deal would happen: Williams/Flynn/[Llull] Lee/Williams Parsons/Morris Gasol/Patterson[DMo] Dalembert/Hill Lose cap room, though, and Williams could still walk at end of year.
The deal would be more realistic with... Williams and Gasol to HOU Lowry and Thabeet to LAL Martin, Scola, Dragic, Budinger, Hill, and future 1st to NJN If the Nets strike out on Dwight then this type of deal would be plausible since Deron sure aint signing an extension with them.
I think adding Petro going to Houston would make the salaries work. Someone try it on the trade machine.
Amel's source told me that deal got shelved, but this one is imminent. Just waiting for the league to clear it. http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=86jvaxo Also, only one more day until this thread title becomes relevant! Hurray!
Don't know why this concept doesn't resonate with Rocket fans since it's fairly straight forward, but generally in this league you cannot trade a passel of journeyman players for a star power player in exchange. There just aren't that many stars in this league to begin with so most teams insist on getting at least a star in return for a star. It's not a simple matter of like for like or pound for pound value. It just doesn't work that way in the NBA and teams that are suckered into deals like that quickly fall to the bottom of the heap. Some Rocket fans continue to struggle with this very basic concept through the Gasol - Lowry discussions, in any case.... About the only thing you have going for in this deal is that the Nets are notoriously stupid front office people so who knows, but in an ordinary NBA setting, New Jersey would find a way to get a Star in return for Williams and they wouldn't have to look very far to find it.
This statement is completely lacking in fact. We have only to look to last year to see how wrong it is. Which star did Utah net when they traded Deron in the first place? Which star Denver net when they traded Carmelo? Frankly, if you want to look at why a deal like this probably DOES make sense for New Jersey, you can look at that Denver-NY deal as a prime example. Denver got a LOT of high quality players, no attitude, hard working, etc. and ultimately came off a lot better than expected. In Amel's proposed deal, which is certainly flawed but one of the better random fan proposals you'll see, the Nets get back 4 very solid players, including one who is solidly in the just below all-star level (Kevin Martin), a crafty, wily, PF who the team/GM/owner apparently have liked in the past, a young PG whose put up great numbers when he starts and a decent role player. Oh and 2 of the guys they get are international players, which probably resonates well with the owner. add on the fact that Deron is a FA unlikely to stay there if the team doesn't meaningfully improve, I think that is a very very fair exchange. The Lakers portion of the proposal again can be questioned, but Lowry is having a break-out year, very well could/should have been an all-star, is much young and much cheaper than Gasol. The Lakers also have a second dominant big in Bynum who they want to featuer more anyway. And Gasol has had a down year. I'm not sure what blockbuster trades you're referring to in the past as factual evidence in some way that players like Deron Williams or Pau Gasol, who both have big negatives (Williams an unrestricted FA, Gasol older and seemingly starting to decline) get traded for more. It's not like KG got traded for a star.
Seriously, I think the Rockets could become contenders if they trade Dragic, Scola, plus filler for Gasol and the 09 collection plus a pick for Kaman.
They didn't receive a star in return and as a result, given some time I think we'll see that this trade will be a flop for Utah. Still early though. I'm not saying this practice is never exercised. I'm saying it's rarely successful. How can you say that? Most of them are either injured already or traded or have been playing overseas. Raymond Felton is a giant bust in Portland. hans't been the same since he left. Gallinari injured practically since his arrival in Denver. Mozgov injured. Chandler playing overseas. Again it's early but which portion of this deal do you see working out really well so far for Denver? My money is on Melo doing better in New York. I'll happily trade you a passel full of solid, gritty journeyman like players, draft picks, money for your player with star power all day long, and If you go to the trouble of checking the record and see how it's played out over the history of the NBA, I'm going to beat you with that philosophy by a wide margin over and over again. Sometimes teams are forced to trade disgruntled players.. i understand that and there's not much you can do in those situations except work with what you have. But the winning franchises know that when they're trading a star, they need to receive a star in return.
