I would expect him to be every bit as raw as Thomas coming out of college. The situation Hill would come into is night and day. The staff is stable, and we hope the qb situation is too. With Floyd and Blackmon gone I'm hoping for Jeffery. If he puts up a good 40 at his pro day I doubt that will happen either. Maybe Wright does the same and becomes the 3rd WR taken. Next on my list has to be Hill. Otherwise it has to be a different position in the 1st.
Perhaps we could trade down a few spots and draft him at 28 (because the 49ers will probably draft a WR) or in the 2nd round ... and grab a few extra draft picks.
I think I read somewhere that Hill trained with a guy who specializes in getting your 40 yard dash time as quick as possible. Basically sprinter training, I suppose. The problem is that I don't know how much of that training really translates to the NFL. This whole combine fascination is becoming so overblown it has become a purpose all to itself.
If Kendall Wright falls to us for being combine "slow", I'll take that . . I fancy him after Blackmon who will go #1 for WR For some reason, I don't see Floyd being all that as some think. Wright & Rueben Randle look the best for where the Texans are picking. Randle has great hands for WR, something we need opposite Dre
What are you guys talking about on Kendall Wright being slow? The link says he ran a 4.42 40 time. I was expecting to see a 4.6 or something.
no sure about that, but the combine report says 4.61. http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/kendall-wright?id=2532977 Hard to believe and will probably push him out of the 1st round.
for comparisons sake Mike Wallace ran a 4.33, and that is the player the talking heads are projecting him as...
A couple thoughts: I would venture that 90% or more of these athletes hire professionals to get them ready for the combine. The key to a fast 40 is running a fast 10 since its the slowest segment of the race and 40yds isn't a long enough distance to overcome a bad start. There's definitely some technique to a proper start so coaching will help but a 4.3 is a 4.3 and that's blazing fast. For the comments about Wright, he's faster than his time indicated. If you watch both his 40s he got out a bit awkwardly, almost slightly stumbling. I think with a good start he's a mid 4.3 -4.4 guy. I wouldn't be surprised to see him run a fast time at his pro day. With regards to Hill and the 20yd shuttle, at 6'4" he's not going to run a great time, his center of gravity is too high. Typically, shorter guys tear up the 20yd shuttle. I've been a strength coach for 16 yrs and I love to watch the athleticism on display at the combine. These guys are freaks of nature. I would like to see the tweak the 40 though. I'd like it electronically timed start and finish, I believe they hand start and electronically finish, and I'd like to see them start in a 2 pt stance. This will help eliminate bad starts. I also think linemen should run a 10-20 vs a full 40 and thy should start in a 3 pt stance since this is what they do on the field. I also hate the 225 test, it measure muscular endurance vs strength or power.
The 40 is important for WRs and DBs but for other positions I would be more concerned with acceleration ability (10-20 yds).
I agree. Hill has tons of physical attributes, but rarely wowed me. Of course, I never could get over one of the worst drops I've ever seen: <object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/D6BhdO59RM0?version=3&hl=en_US&start=150"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/D6BhdO59RM0?version=3&hl=en_US&start=150" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
There's a difference between football speed and sprinter speed, I'd love to get Kendall Wright with the Texans' first pick.
Wide receivers? Relatively often, especially if they are burner types. And if you throw in the 30-yard-dashes that they run, I'd bet that it's 10-15 per game.
Tommy Steeter will be the sleeper of the WR category in this draft, the guy is extremely raw but has length, size, leaping ability, and apparently also speed given that he ran a 4.4 in his 40. He's young but is not the prototypical blocking receiver the Texans target so they'll probably pass. I really like this kid tho.

I've never been high on him, and at this point I officially Do Not Want anything to do with Alshon Jeffery. I am starting to slide towards the camp saying we can hold off on WR in the first round, due to the position depth of this class. If Myers walks away, we should nab Konz in the 1st and go receiver in the 2nd.
I am starting to warm up to Konz. what kind of compensation would we receive for making Meyers a RFA if another team were to sign him? 3rd rounder? it's really becoming hard to get a handle on this WR draft class. at this point in my eyes there are two standouts who are going to be well out of our range in Blackmon and Floyd. After that there are a bunch of moving parts who could be very valuable at the right price, just depends on how you value them. does Wright showing up to the combine out of shape throw up a red flag? do you wait until Jeffery's pro day to see how he runs or take him out of consideration for the first round due to him not participating at the combine?
