OP...how can you NOT research the place before signing a lease?? The comments above could've clearly guided you away from the place.
I used to live in that area when I was a kid ( Imperial Valley Drive 77060) and it was pretty bad then. A lot of big name companies used to stay there (Anadarko left I believe) so I really don't blame you for being confused although you should have done some research. Also, I saw earlier that you mentioned the Trails at Dominion Park. While it is generally a bit safer , you're still too close to Greenspoint and I recommend you don't live there. I'm assuming you want to stay very close, so let me just tell you it's relatively ghetto all the way from Rankin-Airtex-Richey-FM1960. (Going north bound on 45 from that area) The Spring area is probably your best bet if you still want to remain within 15 minutes of your work area. Just do your research there as well as that area can vary. I live in a part of Spring that is falling apart quickly (Spring I.S.D area's for sure IMO)
OMG most people in the thread are acting like its queensbridge or something. It won't be that bad OP. Just do what you gotta do and if you don't like it after 6 months then move out.
The Heights at one point was not as yuppie as it is now, but that does not qualify it as having been ghetto. If anything it would have been closer to a barrio, however, based on what I have heard from people that lived there in the late 60's to early 80's the neighborhood was never run down or anything like that. It's home to Fitzgerald's.
Hell no, I live in the burbs. I was being sarcastic. The OP failed to do his homework. We all gave him sound advice, but he deserves some heckling for his colossal fail. Just take the hit and run as fast as you can. Go to management and tell them your neighbors were so rude to your girl. One asked her, "Want someone to keep you warm tonight." Tell them you are leaving, and that your safety comes first. They will understand. If there was a deposit try to get it back, otherwise forget it. Don't let your credit score put you or your girl in danger. If all else fails, you can always ride out the storm and leave as soon as you can.

Get a big dog that can shoot a gun. Yes it's pretty damn bad. The little lady works over there, I worry about her safety constantly.
I made the same mistake 8 years ago, my and a few friends moved to northborough because we worked .5 miles away. I lived there 12 months, jeep was stolen 1, and broken into 2 other times. We heard gun shots weekly. Nothing ever happened to us personally but its definitely not a good area to be in. Most of my friends were 6'2" 250lbs+ which doesnt seem to be the case for your girlfriend...
My friend went to high school near there and I asked him if he knew where North Borough was. He asked me why, and couldn't stop laughing when I asked. I told him I wanted to know if they were ghetto and he said yeah they're pretty bad. The surrounding area is okay, but the "Borough" as he calls it is the worst in the area. He said they were comparable to third, and fifth ward a several years ago, but the cops cleaned it up these last few years.
Meh, I have said this before. I live in the Northshore neighborhood of East Houston. I've lived in an apartment complex and a home. You don't have to live in an all white enclave or be strapped everywhere you go to be safe. Mexicans and African-Americans have families too, take sensible precautions, lock your doors etc. It is possible you will be a crime victim, that is also true if you live in the Suburbs next to Whitey McWhiterson and Evan Whiteier. I feel sorry for your girlfriend if you are planning to keep her under "house arrest" when you are not around. She probably doesn't need to wander around an apartment complex at night....but going out to her car to drive to Whataburger in daylight is probably pretty safe. I am shocked that the members of this board, who are so macho about other things refuse to live anyplace in Houston proper but the Heights, West U and possibly River Oaks. If color scares you so much, why not move to Kansas or something...cause I guarantee you...Kingwood and the Woodlands aren't going to stay lilly white much longer.
I agree and disagree with this. Houston is a huge melting pot city. You can't get 100% white anywhere. Deal with it. IMO, it's one of the things that makes it great. On the other hand, I lived on Galveston Island, and almost all folks I knew who grew up there and 'made it', meaning got a career, moved off the island because they perceived it as the hood. That seems to be the goal of people who grow up in rough areas. GTFO.
I grew up in the South side where people think it's bad here (Haven't witnessed a violent crime here since 04') and would never move out to Greenspoint. I think there are pockets just like any area here in Houston where things are a bit violent. I do always hear of home invasions and North West Harris county.
That. Was. AWESOME. 1:18 - "What if your child get ammonia for a pair of shoes?" How is this not a meme yet?
