You drove around the area atleast for a few minutes so it's obviously not that bad else you would have never signed the lease...If your that concerned for her safety break the lease its that's simple.

I don't. I actually live in a "nice, friendly suburb" but I also know that people's fears of certain areas are so overstated fears of stuff in general. Why people be so scurred?
thats no excuse! you might have said already, but did you rent this place w/out going there first? and did the dirt-cheap rent which i assume you got not put up any red flags? are you moved in yet? if not id just cut my loses and go somewhere else (at least closer to 1960). i would bet apartments around there have people bail on them all the time - you probably lose your deposit, but it might be worth it to get out now.
