I really like this idea and I think it would go a long way toward making the event watchable again, but I don't think the NBA would even consider doing it. I just can't see them using one of their larger platforms to promote players that aren't in their league. That seems petty, but I think it's the way it would go.

Yeah, and instead we are subjected to Justin Bieber. sigh

I'm sure a streetball champ dunk playoff on Friday to select two who advanced would have bigger viewership than Celebrity game.

And if a Sean White-esque creativity superstar from the streets emerges who no one in the NBA can beat (aside from Lebron), two things can happen...the NBA could sell a Jersey of him and maybe he'd provoke Lebron to come back for his crown. win win

And...if a China player or high-flying Latin American hispanic hero emerges to win, the Jersey sales would go through the roof.

but no, Justin Bieber is a bigger draw I suppose.

Put pressure on the NBA stars... Tell them that if they don't compete then it will be cancelled... Have some of the greats call them out.. Have fans voice their frustrations via commercials...

This. Those greedy bastards shouldn't get money for participating, it's a shame.

I think it'd be kinda cool to do a "Dunked-On" contest. Take the best dunkers and the best shotblockers and have them go head-to-head gladiator style. The dunker is given the ball at the 3pt line and has either one attempt or like 10 seconds to dunk on the shotblocker, while the shotblocker tries to block it.

watch slamm ball... they do this
    - and bad idea because fights would easily break out
    - the dunker will call foul every time while the blocker would probably foul the whole time

Replace it with a flopping contest

This is the idea that I had also, but have them run back and fourth for ten minutes

    Maximum of 3 attempts.

    Offer $1M bonus to winner.

Hopefully endorsement contracts will also offer bonuses.

Allow the amateur winner to compete against the pros.

Did you watch the dunk contest? Have you seen his previous ones?

He is not the best dunk-contest dunker. I'm a die-hard Rockets' fan, but that was terrible.

Side note: I hate when people do a basic windmill in a dunk contest.

Get rid of the dunk contest. It's stupid.

Move to a high-dunk competition. That would be more interesting.

Also, add H-O-R-S-E, with no dunks. That would also be good entertainment.

Like MLB, make the winner of the all-star game home-court for the finals.

Yeah, I was thinking of that, too.

Good thing about this is it completely takes away the judge or fan-based scoring.

You'd probably need a rule regarding no repeat dunks by the same person.

They did horse one time a couple of years back. Omri Casspi was in it, I think Kevin Durant was in it and I forget who the third guy was. It was horrible TV. They did it on some backlot basketball court with an MC similar to what Kenny does during the dunk contest. No one could make a shot and they ran out of trick shot ideas pretty quick.

I actually bumped up the LAST Dunk Contest Improvement thread from 2 years ago, but I SAVED my response and held back on it. Here's my saved response

    ________________________

    Yes admittedly
    [IMG]
There's the current thread [2/25/12] All-Star Saturday Night . Not trying to bypass it. Just its been 2 years since this thread. NBA seemingly has done little to NONE of these suggestions mentioned :)

Has total APATHY now set in about the NBA dunk contest? Stick the final fork in it? Or still worth salvaging?

At the VERY least, people want to see the STARS in the contests. The examples most mentioned, like the Vince Carter contest or Jordan vs Dominique contests

    My suggestions:

    - Get back to having regular broadcasters. Keep the FULL TNT crew OUT of the broadcasting. Now Barkley and Kenny and the bunch have their good funny moments, Barkley with the usual candid humor. But overall I think they, Reggie and everyone can too ACERBIC. Yes everyone would rather be doing something else., but conveying the mood of "I'd rather be doing something else" just doesnt always work.

The old Jordan vs Nique contest, they presented the contest with typical "safe" broadcasters. A bit more PROFESSIONALISM to the presentation I think HELPED.
    ________

Then what I didnt save, I'll ADD to that :

    - David Stern has get out of the game. Its just time for FRESH blood in there, a NEW approach and a FRESH image.

I said have stereotypical cheeseball announcers, figured that would help with David Stern. But dunks are about the ATMOSPHERE around it. The atmosphere of David Stern is NOT conducive to FUN anymore. College atmosphere and gym atmosphere is different than NBA All Star Weekend.

I said in the past dunking is no longer a PRIME TIME EVENT. Its should be on taped delay like poker now.
