where did we get the indication that houston would host the 2013 all star games before the vetoed trade? I never heard about it until the official announcement. where is the proof of an indication before the trade?

Two words Toyota Center. Build the NBA a stadium and you can host the ASG too. The "deal" was always for two ASGs. Nothing to do with the trade veto. That said I don't think we will host again for a long time.

david stern just gave us the all star game to make up for that failed trade.

Until it is actually over, I'm going to hold out hope that we trade for Dwight and DWill and the All-Star game is played here with 2 Rockets in the starting lineup.

Me too. But either way, it sounds like we'll have AT LEAST two all star level players by the break next year.

That's a solid way to lead in to telling us why Houston is not a good choice to host an All-Star game!

    Agreed.

    Wtf is a Houstonite?

And corporate season ticket owners coming late is not an issue. This isn't a Rockets event. As bad ass as it would be for OKC to host (or even Denver or Portland, I guess), Houston was the pick and is better equipped. Boo hop.

    Houstonites...smh.

NOT having an allstar seems to me to be a reason TO host the game - nobody has 'homecourt advantage' - no hometown favorite, etc... seems to me it puts everybody on an equal footing... on wait, it's the nba - so that is not desired...

    False.

Years where the Host city had no all-star.

2007 Las Vegas: No team or all-star
2005 Denver: No All-star (Melo made the team starting 2007)
2003 Atlanta: No All-star (Antoine Walker was an all-star in 2003 but was a Maverick at the time. Became a Hawk in 2004)
    2001 Washington: No All-star
    2000 Oakland: No All-star

Added note: 2010 took place in Arlington, TX. Arlington, Texas does not have an NBA team within its city limits, but it is a part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex that has an NBA team (the Dallas Mavericks).

And that is just from 2000.

Does the hotel situation matter? Do that many people travel to the NBA all star game?

I'm quite certain the reason why Houston got the nod has everything to do with the fact that there are few cities that you know for a fact will have decent, tepid temperatures in mid-February for fans to be able to partake in activities. While Portland is probably a fantastic city, the weather at this time of year is probably not the most conducive to having a quarter of a million people come in.
