no because the limitations of natural gas are only exceeded (greatly) by crappy batteries. size/weight compared to energy stored for batteries is terrible. Plus a CNG tank doesn't cost 10 grand to change, and making it, recycling it doesn't pollute even worse than CO2

To your earlier point, I know very little about the engineering behind natural gas vehicles but when I was in India a couple of years ago, I saw plenty of them driving around. They already have the infrastructure built up in major cities. You can now freely buy natural gas cars or you can retrofit your car with a natural gas tank. This of course makes total sense since India and Pakistan are both huge oil and gas importers so diversifying your supply by introducing natural gas vehicles makes total sense. (I believe both countries are the largest users of natural gas vehicles in the world right now) There's a clear inertia to natural gas cars here because unlike places like India and Pakistan, no one is really pushing for state spending on the infrastructure necessary to make natural gas vehicles viable. But I'm not buying that there are some massive engineering hurdles that prevent this from happening. CNG vehicles already exist in large quantities.

Electric cars for everyone is a pipe dream at this time. 50 years from now could be a different story. However, it would take the current generation of fresh college grads to convince its present leadership to shift policy in that direction. Socioeconomic factors affect how people feel about alternatives. And it wouldn't be cheap or easy.
