Your point is correct wrt to annual improvements. That said, if you already have an ipad, they shouldn't tempt you to trade up. Just like when you had desktops/laptops, you didn't need to get a new one every year.

Part of Apple's amazing-ness, though, is that they've figured out a way to get someone who bought a very similar product a year ago to buy the new version.

I have the original ipad, and will not be upgrading this version.

With phones, to me, it's simpler, because of the 2 year contract, and the phone being cheaper. So every couple years I do upgrade the phone.

I'll never understand why anybody who is an Apple fan feels the need to compulsively upgrade, but certainly those people exist, probably moreso than with any other tech brand.

The irony is, Mac products tend to have the longest shelf life of any tech product, so the upgrades are usually ridiculously unwarranted for most people.

Oh well, more power to them. Brand loyalty is worth its weight in gold.

tablets are all about the screen so a greatly improved screen is awesome. Hopefully this will prompt more 4:3 tablets with the same LCD, then make this level of resolution the norm sooner rather than later.

I don't have an iPad and have been thinking about getting one since thanksgiving... My friend bought an ipad2 and I decided to wait for the ipad 3. Once the full details are out I'll make a decision.

I'm still on the fence on whether to go iPad or Android tablet. My phone is an Android and I'm used to it - some things I really like and some things that irk me. I think I'd need to use an iPad for a week to decide whether the tradeoffs are better or worse. Not a realistic option though...

Same goes with my phone vs iPhone, which I'm eligible to upgrade in a few months. I'll probably just stick w/ my phone until it breaks down.

OTOH, I can't wait to get a new Macbook this year. I'll try Windows again (8!) but I don't find the new things in it very compelling. Not to mention I really like Logic which is Mac only.

Yes, I think this is going to be my first iPad. Looking forward to it.

Also, RE: people who upgrade yearly. While I don't see myself doing it, it should be noted that the iPads hold resale value amazingly well. It's not unheard of to get a really big chunk of your money back if you wish to upgrade.

I still don't feel the need for a tablet. Laptop and phone suffice.

    yup.

    +1

You can use that excuse of "oh it's better because it has so and so feature" for anything..but that doesn't mean you HAVE to upgrade.

people go 3-5 years or more..on the same tv, laptop, and other "ever changing" things but when it comes to apple products, if you don't have the latest one..you're using some antique product.

it's one thing if your existing product is not meet your needs..or is not working properly because of how old it is..but man.

Yup. Take the iPad for example. Good condition iPad 2s should be able to sell for $350 or so once the new one is out. Paying $150 dollars a year to use the latest model seems like a good deal to me.

Bought my kids an iPad when iPad 2 came out. Been waiting for a reason to buy myself one so I'll be getting one of these for myself.

I think that notion is fading away with apple products. It was certainly true several years ago, but the year-to-year jumps have become smaller and smaller. iPods doubled (or more) memory, went color/photos, then video, then nano/shuffle, then iPhone/iPod Touch....but the last several years the unveilings have been pretty underwhelming. Apple upgrades are slowing down to the speed of TV (and maybe below it right now).

I still don't have an iPad because, IMO, it's still nothing more than a larger version of my Touch. I don't have an iPhone....because it's my Touch with a 3G cell (and an insanely easy to shatter face).

The smart thing they did with the iPad was force it to be month-to-month....but its unsubsidized price is a whale. No way was I getting it as a 3G device....but on 4G it makes a little more sense to me. I'm just worried about the data limits from Verizon.

got my partner the ipad 2. can't see myself with this tablet or any other. reason? screen sizes on these smartphones eliminate the need. splashtop works wonderfully on this nexus.
