Are you serious? Harsh contract. Dumb move by J.R.

I wouldn't say harsh contract at all, J.R Smith is a new addition to the team so the team would expect practices to build chemistry.

It's kind of like a very talented high school basketball player, way better than everyone on his team, but he misses out all practices because he thinks he is too good for his team. Pretty disrespectful.

Him and Martin are the types you vision to end up in CBA when their NBA days are over, not smart of them to burn the bridges so soon with their complete lack of respect for the league and team.

cant say i blame him too much. its probably difficult to stay interested going from with the best in the world to very inferior competition. he could drop 30 in his sleep there.

probably like being in college and you have your challenging classes, and then the blow offs. you dont need to attend the blowoffs to pull a good grade so most of the time you probably wont show up.

but a million dollars for missing some practices in preseason ? seems they just wanted to stick it to him

JR Smith still dominated in the league so he definitely got his. The CBA probably knew that he was a headcase and they still signed him. When he does something like that he gets penalized, and JR Smith got penalized and didn't complain about it or sue the team.

There would be nothing to sue about but not complaining about it is the least he could do. He must have really dominated the competition to cause so much trouble and still get the most votes for the All-star games, or is it that Chinese are digging the bad-ass attitude? Marbury has redeemed himself over there.

That's a terrible attitude to go by when you're a professional athlete or with anything.

agreed, that is a cancer mentality, iverson is one of the greats of all time, its that mentality that is why he can't get a team to trust him as a consultant, player, coach anything. Hard work is contagious nad adds to the culture of the team, as does discipline to go through the motions, even if you perform at night because it is more than just about you and 'dropping 30'. Say what you want about kobe, but when he is practicing harder than guys trying to just make the team and he is your superstar, it makesure there is no complacency in your team and pushes everyone to raise their level in practice, thus making those who need it and your overall team product better.

JR might've gotten 60, he may have been CBA best player, but there is a reason the team with the best individual didn't win in the post season.

Couldn't he just attend practice and half ass it?

I mean, what else could he do when he skips these practices? Not like he can go out and communicate with everyone else.

Still doesn't change the fact that he is a r****d. To give up $1,000,000+ cause he did not want to attend practices. No wonder a lot of these athletes are bankrupt after they retire.

His team didn't even get to the post season. His team finished 5th last year and only 10th this year, despite reportedly investing twice as much on player salaries (we all know where the excess went). Sure he got his stats (finished the season as the #1 scorer) but you can't have any chemistry with your teammates if you don't practice. But nothing he cares about, after the fines he still made 2 million dollars.

Initially people loved him, and the team's home attendance was 100% for most of the season. However, this picture, from his last game in China (which was a home game), pretty much summed up what Zhejiang fans felt about him at the end.

He didn't have to pay the million, it just got deducted from his salary. He still made 2 million dollars for basically messing around and only showing up for games.

It sounds like a win-win for J.R. He still got paid $2 million out of a possible $3 million, he didn't have to practice at all, and when he came back, he had a spot waiting for him on the team with the biggest spotlight right now. It sucks that such a crummy person can get so much for acting like an arrogant, disrespectful, ungrateful d-bag.

The team in China really only has themselves to blame. Signing JR Smith and not expecting problems is like signing Eddy Curry and become shocked that he showed up fat.

To be fair, I think they were expecting it, which is the reason why they had a pretty strict contract.

It just turns out that Smith isn't bothered with losing 1/3 of his total earnings.
