Ya in hindsight..... the guy is coming to us with no credentials of any kind. I gave him some respect in advance because I liked the old Celtics.

Yeah, I just thought it was a little dramatic that he almost started crying from watching the Rockets play and later was even questioning why he took the job. I guess everyone has their little moments of weakness and McHale was just being honest about it. I do hope they're just very brief moments of weakness though, because like francis said, I wouldn't want him to quit on the Rockets when the going gets tough.

I get that other coaches second guess their decisions, team, and hit low points, but doesn't mchale have a history of flip flopping on whether he wants to coach or not? I'm pretty sure he said at one point it wasn't for him. He's second guessing his decision to coach over one game early in the season? At a time when we were winning more than losing? Worrying about players being out of shape, at the start of a lockout shortened season? I mean, is he not thinking logically here? That should have been expected and it's not like these guys have a history of slacking off or of lacking energy to finish games.

It's like he didn't even know what he got himself into. I've always felt that what closed out the deal for him was seeing this as an extended vacation where he and his wife could be close to her parents (who live here). He gets to do something, make some money, while they, especially her, enjoy the full time company of her parents/family.

That being said, i don't question his ability to coach, but i'd be worried that he's not all in and his extreme highs and lows are going to affect the team negatively. At least JVG was consistent with his attitude.

Somebody please pull up the greatest post I have ever read on Clutchfans, the one with JVG's daily schedule on it where he wakes up at 3AM and goes, "UGHHH". Begin self-loathing. I have no idea how to begin finding it, but that's what I want to imagine McHale is doing now. Here would be the post-game comments from tonight:

He reminds me more of Doc Rivers.

Doc was never really known for his X and Os and before going to the Celtics but is best known as being a motivator and has surrounded himself with good XO guys.

JVG is not like McHale to me because JVG is one of the better defensive minds the league has ever seen honestly.

Seriously... are you EVER right about ANYthing? The teams JVG had here were painfully shallow and/or injury depleted. I mean yeah, he wasn't a great offensive coach, but losing in those playoffs was a team personnel problem, not a coaching problem. If you recall, JVG had another rag-tag group of players go from an 8th seed to the FINALS, and give the Spurs a decent run for their money considering Ewing was injured.

Besides all that, there is no way JVG would have this team putting out this kind of offensive output. So that alone nullifies any offensive comparison to JVG.

I mean my god, dude... And you think you could coach? I have a headache...

McHale has an honesty that surrounds him like an aura. Anyone that disrespects the fact that he says, in earnest, what is on his mind, just go read Chris Broussard on ESPN and STFU. Seriously, the guy won't capitulate, won't manipulate, won't patronize, and won't acquiesce to the casual observer for ratings or love. If you don't respect his honesty, there is a point to be made that you and David Stern are too good of friends.

Let's Agree: Kevin McHale is at least a decent coach

Let's Agree: Kevin McHale is at least a decent coach.

He may not be a Hall of Fame coach, but he does do at least a decent job with what he is handed. His honesty, his candidness, his proclivity for responsibility is a breath of fresh air. I've warmed to him as a leader, and the more I listen to him in interviews, I would happily be in a foxhole with this guy. His dad was a WWII guy, and he seems to embody the spirit of an old school NCO. "You know when your heart beats that you're alive" - maybe the most ubiquitous phrase in infantry units across this country. Hooyah Kev. Best of luck, and I'll be cheering your name at the onset of games.

McHale is a decent coach. Some of the defensive credit should go to Sampson however.

McHale will only get better as the season rolls along. I like the fact that his old school style of coaching is being accepted by the players. One can only see how that style does not go over well with the younger generation. I am glad the Rockets have players that have bought into McHale's style and I hope they come out of the All Star Break ready to continue the roll. I am just not so sure about the trading deadling though I hope Morey can make the right moves and not mess with the chemistry gained thus far.

I got the feeling he was being a bit sarcastic when he said he felt like crying.

i saw the interview and i like kevin, he is very personable. It got a bit annoying with adelman, as he would choose his words carefully and sometimes would leave me with a question mark.

In that sense, yes...but Doc has forever bent over backwards trying to be BFFs with his players, and really sucking up to his stars. This is the guy that cut Horace Grant from the Magic when McGrady had a temper tantrum about an SI article calling him out for slacking on D.

McHale, like JVG, is willing to piss off and bench his main guys if they aren't going all in. Doc wouldn't do that in a million years.

(Insert mention of DD's year-long crusade to get JVG fired here)
