The inspection station that failed my car, wanted to charge me $800 for a new rim because thats what it needed to pass the inspection. I left there mad thinking it was ridiculous and it was. After pricing other local garages and the dealership, the dealership was the cheapest and since I purchased it from them, they gave me a discount on top of that.

I told the dealership to replace the Front Right rim and do a state inspection.

I disagree with taking some blame. What if this was something internal that couldn't be seen without removing some parts, would you really say he has to shoulder some of the blame?

Sounds like they wanted to rip you off worse than the dealership did. Can you really trust them and their word?

And where did the state trooper come in

But it's not. I'm sure he could use that against them though, if it was impossible for him to really just see. I'm not really trying to argue if it's right or wrong, morally, to expect that, but like i wrote earlier, it's probably part of their fine print. He should check anyway, because if it is, then he's got no case. It'll be their signed release versus his word. Too many things can come into play once you drive off and let time pass by. That's to their advantage when it comes to defending their work.

Very first time the car was inspected. While it was being inspected, the mechanic told me a state trooper came by, looked at it while he was there, and agreed that it shouldn't be passed because of the rim. Sounds like a gimmick I know, so I couldn't make it by the state troopers office today to have them give me their opinion on it today, will go tomorrow and I hope to get something in writing.

If the state troopers opinion of my rim like it is now is not acceptable for state regulations then that is saying something when the dealership tells me the rim is fine like it is. (fine as in it will pass the state inspection)

yeah, i just edited my question to explain why i was asking. the inspection station may have been trying to hook you into spending....even if a tropper agrees now, the dealership will probably claim it was fine then and became worse since.

I just don't believe you can fight this on a larger scale. You need concrete proof or a history, so that you'll be taken seriously and get something out of it. I think your best bet is to keep nagging them personally and hope they crack. Mention all the gas you've used to handle the issue. Throw in time missed from work or something. At worse, only pay their cost for both rims (220*2=440). you've already paid 350, so only 90, instead of 110, for the second rim. You may want to keep pushing them on "their price" though, it's probably lower than that.

I don't believe so. It's one thing to question whether or not I know what I'm talking about which is very conceivable. It's another to without a doubt stick by what they believe and not give any credibility to the fact they may have actually made a mistake. For this reason alone, anything I settle for short of a free rim and maybe even some compensation of my time and a formal apology is unreasonable in my opinion.

You probably have to keep nagging them.

My question is, why does a stock rim cost $350?

Was checking to see if there was a better price near you, but can't find anything.

In my 20 years, that is by far the most expensive plain steel wheel I have ever seen. Usually, steel wheels, max, run $200, and on average, closer to $125-$150.

If its an alloy wheel for like a honda or acura or whatever, they are always very pricey. Specially from the dealership.

Which is why the lower end version of cars come with hubcaps.

If you ever have to replace a stock wheel directly from the dealership, you'll see just how much stock parts cost as compared to even some custom wheels.

Reminds me of the time I took my van into the dealer because the A/C was out. The van had both front and rear A/C. They fixed the A/C but only in the front. The back blew hot air. When I came back and confronted the service rep over the rear A/C is is still not working (meaning they didn't do the job correctly), they would not accept responsibility. They wanted me to rent a car, leave the van, and pay to fix it...after already paying well over a thousand bucks on the job and a rental car already while they worked on it for four or five days. That is when I decided I would never own another one of their cars.
