So any news if the author of that phrase got any disciplinary action?

Racial slur is judged in the current circumstances. Its benign origin has nothing to do with its offensiveness. If many Asian Americans found the phrase offensive instinctively, it is offensive. Your origin and grammar justification misses the point.

This will never get the attention that a person making a racial slur towards a black person would receive since Asians do not have civil rights activist galore to drum up publicity for the incident. Probably have more important things to do than worry about petty racial slurs.

You would ask a Black person that question. I dont see why he or she wouldnt be. There is no place for phrase with racial connotation in media, intentionally or not. Its zero tolerance there. Now, should one get upset if friends jokingly use such phrase, I can see the understanding of cleverness, origin etc. But this is different.

The phrase "Chink in the armor" as used by ESPN is not a pun, it is a double entendre.

Double entendre's are favourites for racists because you can plausibly deny the racial meaning of the phrase, like so many posters in this thread are want to do.

The obvious meaning is the non-racist one, meaning that Jeremy Lin has a weakness with turnovers. However, the phrase doesn't make sense just based on the obvious meaning since "chink in the armor" usually would be used to refer to someone/something that is considered invincible. and jeremy lin is an underdog made good story, so using that phrase makes very little sense in his context.

The second meaning that makes it "clever" is the racial one, "chink" refers to lin, and "in the armor", would refer to either the loss or the knicks. The second meaning is a blatant racial slur against lin's ethnicity in a nudge nudge wink wink sort of way.

The double entendre is used as a way to hide this racist slur so there is a sliver of plausible deniability.

But realistically, any thinking person with an above average grasp of the english language can see that this is a blatant, deliberate racist slur against lin's ethnicity.

If only "Chink" wasn't a derogatory word I'd think its one of the best ESPN headlines ever, funny as hell while giving you a foreshadowing of what happened.

The headline is purely racist, the non-racist meaning of that headline doesn't make any sense except at the most superficial level.

All the humor in that headline is due to the racial humor.

if 'chink' wasnt derogatory then it wouldnt be "funny" and it wouldnt be offensive. it would just be a headline.

At ESPN we are aware of three offensive and inappropriate comments made on
ESPN outlets during our coverage of Jeremy Lin.

Saturday we apologized for two references here. We have since learned of a
similar reference Friday on ESPN Radio New York. The incidents were separate
and different. We have engaged in a thorough review of all three and have
    taken the following action:

    • The ESPN employee responsible for our Mobile headline has been
    dismissed.

    • The ESPNEWS anchor has been suspended for 30 days.

    • The radio commentator is not an ESPN employee.

We again apologize, especially to Mr. Lin. His accomplishments are a source
of great pride to the Asian-American community, including the Asian-American
employees at ESPN. Through self-examination, improved editorial practices
and controls, and response to constructive criticism, we will be better in
    the future.

If possible, please watch or record today's NBA pre-game show on ABC, 12:30-
1:00PM ET. Jeremy Lin and the Knicks play the Dallas Mavericks today at 1PM
    on ABC.

    We appreciate your feedback.

    Sincerely,

    John Kosner
Executive Vice President and General Manager
    ESPN Digital and Print Media

I doubt your really Asian - you have no pride left. You've probably been brainwashed in the ghetto by now, judging by the way you write. They've probably been picking on you since you were a kid so you've come to accept it instead of fighting for what's right. And that's what separates you from someone like Jeremy Lin.

actually no. im a big asian guy. no one ever messed with me in school and there were many times where ive had to protect my friends, who were asian and smaller, from bullies. i guess ive been lucky since i look like a guy you wouldnt mess with and would go toe to toe with whoever. i wouldnt know what it's like to be a scrawny little asian guy.

people that take this seriously and are insulted by it have no idea how it's like in the real world. you get talked down in all the competitive careers (all races) and dont move up by crying about it. try working with surgeons that have years/money on you. theyll talk **** like it's part of the process, to see if you got the nuts to make it. if youre going to cry about a racial slur here or there, i wouldnt want you to be my surgeon and i wouldnt want you to 'represent' me as the only asian american basketball player. to be great, you have to endure.

Isn't this the same ESPN who just last fall fired Hank Williams Jr. for his comments?

Someone higher up in that company needs to be PUBLICALLY fired for this. This was no accident.

I work on Wall Street and I was a two time All American in college. Not in basketball but an Olympic sport so I know a little when it comes to competition.

If you don't take issue with this type racism then you've stopped fighting.

really? why is your method of fighting racism the only way?

there will be people who fight with words and activism and there will be those that fight by doing, being. i'd rather be the latter, that's just my preference. in the end, the goal is the same. there will be differences in method and opinion but it doesnt make what you say or i say right.
