Who will be Upton Sinclair of china?

    http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/454/transcript

While I guess this is better than the rice farms this is very reminiscent of early 20th century America. While people decry unions they did once have a purpose and got many rights we enjoy today. Long term this model is unsustainable as eventually people will rise up to get more rights.

Would their lives improve if Apple stopped making things there?

Their lives would improve if they were treated like human beings and paid a fair wage.

No they would not. However, But if you can double the standard of living of 10 people (better working conditions) knowing that you have to sacrifice your standard of living by 10% (increased costs), would you consider that a good trade?

That said, it is a corporations' duty to maximize the value for their shareholders. It would be wrong if they don't look to maximize profit. Which is why I do think governments should as a check to make sure they do it within certain bounds set by their society.

Look at it this way, I owe it to myself to maximize my happiness in any way I see fit. But some of those actions could cause harm to others, therefore government has deemed those actions wrong and not permitted.

If Apple had to pay a "fair wage", they would just make phones in the US.

How does that help the Chinese worker?

Yes... It is quite possible that they would be happier living off the land than the current garbage they live in. Someday people will look back and ask how we condoned it and could live with ourselves.. Like we view slavery and labor camps.

They would improve if Apple used their leverage to push for better working conditions, or, heavens forbid, set up some training or education that would allow those workers to advance to higher positions. If we'd spent the postwar era practicing fair trade and investing in foreign infrastructure rather than proxy wars, political assassinations and nuclear stockpiles, global poverty wouldn't exist. What a wasted century.

Isn't there a middle ground somewhere? You know, decent environment for these foreign workers but still cheaper than paying a bunch of unionized rednecks in Alabama?

    I wish Ron Paul would.

Judoka, careful. He was a bit more poltical than a nice meat inspector.

I recommend the The Autobiography of Upton Sinclair. Great book. I should reread it and was fortunate to find a copy at a used book store. God, we could use a guy like him now.
