You haven't lived in Houston have you? It is very racially mixed and diverse. Further I have found in the north racism is more overt than the south, always suspected it was because people in the north are more likely to speak their mind.
We are not saying different things. While people in the north are more willing to speak their mind, the racism you'll hear isn't just blatant ignorance. Folks have more familiarity with other culters ...therefore that racism can be very snarky cause they know full well they are being a douch. Down here, most of the racial crap I hear is just outright ignorance. For example, like all brown people are Mexican. In the north they know Spanish speaking people could be Peurto Rican or whatever ...not just automatically call everybody a Mexican. I'm sure that guy did it intentionally. ...but no way to prove it.
My experience has been the exact opposite having lived in Chicago, Boston and Albany. If anything everything in the North was more segregated.
This sounds like someone who has never lived in the North. Speaking strictly from stereotypes. Actually, krosfyah's analysis is probably much more accurate. And if I'm not mistaken, krosfyah was/is one of the Red Rowdies so he's definitely lived in Houston.
Just my experience... Boston and Chicago were the most overtly racist, followed by Ohio... Witnessed lots of segregation and obvious racism, especially by European immigrants towards blacks. Was surprised honestly, because was expecting the opposite...
This seems to be a pretty reasonable assumption but everyone is conveniently overlooking it. Why is everyone else so freaking confused? It was annoying reading this thread.. "durr, why would he go through all that trouble!?, durr, maybe he was just being goofy or was confused!?, durr," As for him going back to get his burger, if he was willing to put forth the effort to make such a stupid joke, he's probably stupid enough to overlook his food getting spat on.
I think you are missing the point and we still are not saying different things I agree that segregation is often worse and the racism can be just as bad. I am saying it is OFTEN a different flavor of racism. I am saying folks in the north (big cities), generally, know they are racist and INTENTIONALLY throw out slurs. Often the slurs are more "snarky" cause they think theya are being funny or something. Down here, folks often say dumb things and don't even realize it or if they do realize it then they misstate basic facts. Here, all brown skin folks are Mexican or Asians are Chinese. I still contend the guy knew what he was doing and was trying to be a jerk.
you know this whole thing is exactly what happened with the lin chink in the armor incident. it isnt like the writer doesnt know what would happen if you put the word chink with a picture of jeremy lin right above it. and yet we have ppl insisting that it was a simple mistake. cmon now
