I thought about trying just Roku/PS3 and cutting cable altogether, but the MLB and NBA league passes are only good for out of market. Simple fact is that if you want to watch Astro and Rocket games in Houston you need cable. There are some backdoor methods you can use, by I've often found them unreliable, and I need my games. Otherwise I would have done it already With the Hulu Plus/Netflix/League Passes combo, i could have access to everything i want and save 60 bucks a month.
www.Veetle.com That's where I get my NEW movies fix (in HD). TV shows like American Dad, Southpark, Old Simpsons etc. It's a streaming website. The Android App kicks ASS. I too, am dropping my Cable (tv part) tomorrow. I barely watch tv. I watch the Texans....Game of Thrones....Walking Dead....Spartacus....that's it.
I really want to do this as well but its so hard to drop HBO and sports channels. My bill is 190 a month for broadband, phone and cable. Freaking outrageous.
i think you guys are on to something seriously but i like my basic cable too much tnt, msnb, history channel (not so much anymore), cnbc, i maximize the basic cable. look, i post a lot in the D&D and i think an unbiased opinion will tell you i'm pretty informed. i don't get most of it from the internet, i watch news channels. the last real job i had we had to news stations going in the office and eat that stuff up. but that's just me
Further research: Jailbreaking an Apple TV allows you to load the WatchESPN iPhone app, but that is no good. You need to prove you are a subscriber, and even still, Comcast does not support it. So, from I can tell, ESPN is not an option via Jailbreaking anymore than HBO GO is. Sure, you can piggyback someone's stream, but that's unreliable.
Sometimes HBO shows some episodes on HBOGo before they even show on the air. But most of the time it will be on the website right after the show airs for the first time. And it's not just current seasons... it's all HBO shows, documentaries, movies that they've ever had. So if you've never had HBO ever, there is a ton of really good shows to catch up on. Sopranos of course, Deadwood, Entourage, Flight of Concords, etc. Just a bunch on top of their documentaries and stuff.
It's been close to 18 months since I cancelled cable, and I have no regrets. Between the use of Netflix streaming, Hulu, HBOGO (use a friend's login), ESPN360 (use a friend's login), less than legal streaming services, and an over-the-air HD antenna, I really don't miss much.
I dropped my cable last year and its not as bad as I thought it would be. I have netflix and most all of the channels web sites replay the shows a day to a week later. I sill get the dvd's by mail for my fx shows I can't find on the net. It takes awhile to adapt.
Yeah, for some reason I've been watching more ESPN3.com games (that are also on ESPN) on my computer streaming instead of on the big screen in the living room.
I dropped cable almost 2 years ago. I was paying $120/month for internet and 200 channels that I barely watched. Now I pay about $45 for just internet. The extra ~$75/month in savings more than covers the following services: Netflix Amazon Video / Amazon Prime NBA League Pass Broadband (I live in Austin, so I can still get the Rockets) Redbox occasionally Antenna (for local news and Houston Texans games) I bought a Roku that streams most of these, they are as cheap as $49 now. You can even get UFC PPV on Roku. I bought the season pass for Breaking Bad last season, I'll probably continue doing that for shows I like. The only thing I ever miss is the DVR. If I want to watch something on antenna, I have to watch it live.
Yeah, I saw ours yesterday. $281.00 for phone, U450, Sports package, Paladium, Max internet and phone. Unbelievable. I'm getting rid of the phone as we have never used them once, and I'm gonna call UVerse and threaten to leave and get u450 for free for 6 months. It's so easy. I just cannot live without my History channel, Science, Nat Geo, Military channel and a few others. I also have Hulu+ to catch up on old shows and will be buying a Roku today, for some reason I've been putting it off. BTW- Love the new UVerse wireless cable boxes. Perfect for the bathroom TV now!
Man I'm going to throw out a ton of cabbage in this thread at the end of it. I've found out a lot in the last week or so about streaming tv and stuff. I really love this forum.
To watch the Astros/Rockets via MLB or NBA League Pass, you could use a service like publicVPN.com. When I am out of the country and unable to watch Netflix or Hulu, I subscribe to publicVPN.com ($6.95 for 30 days). Since I am going through a VPN service, my home location is now within the U.S. You would just want to make sure that the hosting company is not in the Houston area.
Roku has more services. AppleTV has less services, but one advantage is you can easily stream stuff off of your Iphone or Ipad. For instance, if I have a picture, website, or video on my Iphone that I want to share on the TV screen, I can easily, within seconds, send that information to the tv screen.
If any of you guys are in NYC. I wonder how convenient this really is https://aereo.com/home Live broadcast TV service that streams over the Internet.
What's the quality like on these jailbreak streams? I'm assuming most are flash streams so it can't be great. And how are they now since video sharing sites like megaupload have shutdown?
I'm in the Roku camp as well. I can't vouch for NBALP, but I have NHL Gamecenter (basically the same thing as Center Ice) and it works fantastically. However, from what I understand you get blacked out for local games, which won't work well if you're in Houston (I thought about getting the MLB package with the Roku so I could watch the Mariners as I'm in Seattle, but no dice). I like just paying $8 for Hulu plus and that's it. If you're an Amazon Prime customer they have a ton of free streaming movies available via Roku as well.
I seriously doubt Apple TV provides illegal internet streams (for ESPN and HBO GO and bootleg movies) any different than the ones you get on your computer. There is nothing magical about Apple TV jailbroken as that youtube implies. Let's not confuse this: there is no way Apple would give you better streams to illegal feeds. The streams in that Youtube are just the same ones you get on your computer. Jailbreaking the Apple TV just allows you to surf more easily and, if there are sharing apps for illegal streams, you'd be able to load that.
