With the way the West is (wide open), I would.

With a guy like Howard, only team in my way is OKC.

I chose no, but I would depending on what we give up. For Scola and Martin (nothing more) I'd do it without ext, because even if he don't resign we would have cap relief by getting rid of Martin and Scola. Then we would be able to turn the PF position over to PPat and DMo. We would have the money to bring Dragic and Lee back.

Yes. Win-win to me. If he stays, we can build around him and be a contender. If he leaves, we have no choice but to tank, or depending on cap room, we would have enough to go after a young player with star potential (Harden, Gordon, Asik, Mcgee).

I probably would and bank on being able to sign/trade for D-Will or some other star. Only if trading for Dwight leaves us enough assets to pick up another star though.

He would never be a mediocre center. He is ridiculously good defensively and still so damn athletic and strong that you have to account for him on offense.

Is he polished? Hell no. If he effective? Hell yes.

I absolutely do it, with Lowry the only guy I try to hold back.

Worst case scenario, he leaves and we've finally cleared out the roster to start over.

Best case scenario, he stays and we instantly become contenders in the West.

You almost have to do it.

Screw facilitating his move, especially to a Western rival. Screw his list. Call the bluff.

We would be able to amnesty Turkoglu.

Even if he doesn't sign an extension and we can't get D-Will, a team built around Lowry + Howard is a contender this year. We could at least take a shot at winning now.

Wow all these posters here want to gamble. Yes, let's trade the house and acquire millions of debt for that superstar who wants to leave and join Dallas/Lakers. Of course these the same posters who click their tongues and keep saying DM should have traded Tmac and Yao long before they became useless.

$$$? We're talking about $$$? How much more money do you think Dwight Howard will make in endorsements in LA rather than Houston with a stripped down team? Do you know MJ only made 7M a year for most of his career? Now he owns a team! Endorsements are where the $$$ really are, and there's more of that in glamour teams.

The fact is, if DH doesn't want to remain in Orlando, the team that believed in him and drafted him, why will he stay in Houston? Its gonna take a ton of assets to get him, maybe all we'll be left is Marcus Morris and Dragic+Orlando castoffs like Hedo. New Jersey did the exact same thing, they gave a king's ransom for Deron in hopes that he will resign there even if the team stinks. WHat's happening to them now, looks like they might lose him for nothing. How can anybody expect Houston won't suffer a similar fate?

Yes as long as we get to keep the NY pick, C-Lee, Patterson, and Lowry. Everybody else and other future picks can go but Martin and Scola have to be part of the deal. I would even take bake Turk.

Who would we give up? What would we have to take on besides Howard? What does our cap situation look like going forward? Get answers, or at least some reasonable assumptions, to those questions and a discussion makes more sense. At the very least, I would want him to do what CP did, which is agree to not exercise his option if we get him, so that might put me in a "no, I wouldn't" camp. If we didn't give up the entire farm and/or didn't have to take Turkeyglue, then it could still be worth the risk. We'd have the cap space if he bailed. If we're stuck with Turkey, and gave up a heck of a lot, then we'd look pretty stupid if he bailed, wouldn't we. And we'd be well and truly screwed.

Something to think about, not that we have a decent chance of getting him.

edit: emjohn made an excellent point that we could amnesty Turkeyglue.

Of course you do, because then when he screws us the following year Stern would give us 2 top 5 picks.

If you've seen CBA language that forbids a trade+amnesty, I'm all ears. But everything I've seen says:
    1 Amnesty per team
Can be done during set (offseason) windows between now and 2015
Can only be used on a contract signed before the current CBA

Having a top 5 NBA player for half a season beats holding onto a mediocre core that isn't going anywhere meaningful....ever.

We're 10 deep, without counting Morris. I guarantee our post-trade team would crush the lineup we have now and be poised for a legit playoff run. I don't know about you, but I'd rather put my money on:

    Howard - Patterson - Morris - Lee - Dragic
    than
    Dalembert - Scola - Parsons - Martin - Lowry

...and that's a more extreme angle to take. Orlando can only accept so many players in return for Howard or Howard/Turk. There can't be a midseason 7-for-2, and that's the only way it could overly drain our depth.
