Hey guys, I saw a commercial where Joe Montana says that he's thinking about a comeback. The Texans are a good team, so surely he'd want to come here. What do y'all think? Should the Texans give him a shot. He's 10x better than Schaub.
This. To me, what it comes down to is how much Peyton wants it. If he wants the Texans and believes he'll be healthy, he can make it happen. Wait until May or June, prove he can make all the throws, and the risk on Houston's part goes WAY down. The flip side, of course, is that Peyton would be risking more himself. And his agent and others around him are going to tell him not to do this. Other potential teams are likely to have moved on and/or had their QB situations addressed via other free agents or the draft. I'm sure he could still get a job - he is Peyton Manning, after all - but his salary leverage would be dramatically reduced. If Peyton really wants the Texans, there's a way around the above scenario. Otherwise, you're exactly right and it's why the Texans won't do it. Too much risk of Manning being the second coming of Tony Boselli and handing the full-time job to TJ Yates.

Agreed. Peyton doesn't fit what the Texans run on offense, so there is no way they should rip up their offensive playbook and get rid of a guy who runs their system very well to sign a player, no matter how good he has been, unless they are 100% sure he is healthy and can make all of the throws. I firmly believe that if Matt Schaub was healthy last year, this team goes to the Superbowl. I don't want to throw Schaub away and then end up with a weak Manning and set this team back.
My guess? He was playing an innocent game of, "Would you play for the... Patriots?" "Sure." "Steelers?" "Sure." "Texans?" "Sure." Who *wouldn't* have the Texans high on their pie-in-the-sky wishlist right now? They are a very attractive team: loads of good, young talent and they play in an easy division. Other than SF, I can't imagine there being a better *football* destination this offseason. But there are plenty of available options out there in which Manning doesn't have to seriously rock a boat to join; he doesn't seem like that type of guy. He likely respects the heck out of Schaub. This feels like Bill Cowher all over again.......
Can he even throw the football. I'm positive that reports from just a few days ago stated that he had absolutely NO velocity when throwing. And its likely that those claims were just as substantiated as this rumor is. I don't think the Texans want anything to do with Peyton's neck injury.
I think the most exciting thing about this "story" is that it seems to be universally accepted that the Texans are "Superbowl contenders". Could any of us have predicted this a year ago today? Not me...
Peyton doesn't have the players to throw to outside Dre and Daniels ... this team has to be a 'run first team'. I don't see Manning fitting in this team, but I wouldn't mind having a Hall of Fame QB ... So Schaub 2nd QB and Yates 3th QB ... that would be deeeeeeeeeep. :grin:
Went to NFL.com and their lead story was about the cowboys should go after Peyton. The thought makes me want to vomit.
He made Austin Collie, Blair White, and Jacob Tamme's look all world. Why wouldn't he be able to do the same with anyone on the Texans except Jacoby? All you have to do is have precise route running skills, timing, and hands to be able to catch a pass from Peyton, this of course being if he's healthy.

Then, his rationale? Um, say what? Are you really insinuating that Manning lacks the athleticism of Matt Schaub and the ability to run a simple bootleg? Yes, there's no way Manning could ever run such an incredibly complex play. And yes, John, thanks for giving me the rundown of the current Houston QB depth chart. I had no idea. There are lots of reasons not to pursue Manning. It would rock the boat/chemistry on a team that's already Super Bowl caliber. He might seek too much money, to the point where other valuable players would have to be let go. He might turn out to be the second coming of Tony Boselli and leave us with TJ Yates. These are all valid perspectives on why the Texans might not go after Manning. Instead, this genius is convinced that it's because Matt Schaub is one of only a few people on the planet capable of executing a bootleg. This is the biggest beat writer for one of the largest newspapers in the country. My goodness, no wonder this industry is struggling.
