Because Morey had a hunch how cap space would play a major factor going forward with the new CBA (which turned out to be true). So.... we take a risk on 4 players who may or may not amount to anything. If they don't amount to anything then you have a sizable chunk of contracts coming off the books the provides a good deal of flexability. Not much downside to the plan.
Lolz exactly. To some folks Morey is damned is he does and damned if he doesn't. Personally, I think it's an ego thing and the need to be that person who can say "I told you so". Morey is the Obama of GMs now in the eyes of quite a few on here.
You can blame D'antoni on that. Lin did not even get to practice with the rotation players until a week ago.
Exactly. I don't get what's so hard to understand that it was simply the wrong situation and the wrong time for Lin to succeed here. I'm not sure what talent evaluator could have had him playing this well. He certainly didn't light it up in the limited minutes in Golden States. Hell even in April of 2011, when he was averaging his highest MPG, you couldn't see this coming. So I'm not sure how you put this on Morey's "lack of talent evaluation". While I certainly wish Lin well as a player and a person, a part of me wants him to fail just to shut people up on this forum. But mostly I want the Knicks to fail for their draft pick we own.
I think D'Antoni was quoted that he would not play Lin. I was screaming about the stupidity in light of the awful PG play they had. D'Antoni was just lucky in his desperation. About his practice, Chandler (and another guy I forgot who) said that Lin had been tearing it up in practice. Looks to me D'Antoni was like lots of other subconscious racists, didn't think Lin deserved a chance even when he obviously performed well.
It's just to show how stubborn coaches can be. Chandler said Lin kills in practice. Yet D'antoni still chose to play Douglas for quite long. I don't if the same thing happened to Morey. Lin must have done a lot damage to keep him on the team until last minute.
I think coaches want that experience, not someone who hasn't done anything remotely remarkable in his professional career. People seem to forget he did get some limited backup PG minutes in GS. Perhaps the Knicks just gave Lin the best circumstances to shine. The more you learn about Lin's situation in NYC it seems that it was luck he got a start.
Like Joey Dorsey over the NBA's current leading shot blocker DeAndre Jordan and having Rudy Gay fall in your lap and then trading that lottery pick for a role player. Lol
Morey dropped the ball big time here but even though he would've been on the bench, we might have found him some playing time in case of injury. Everybody could see the guy could play so giving Adrien a spot over Lin is crazy, especially since we not cut his ass.
Let's stop with the 'but Golden State and the Knicks were wrong too!' as putting the Rockets' brain trust on that level really shouldn't make anyone feel better.
Knicks got lucky, we got unlucky. Nobody knew Lin was going to be this good and if they tell you they did they're lying. Some might have thought he would be a serviceable bench player, but letting go a serviceable bench player is not a franchise make or break decision. There's nothing we or the front office can do about it now so quit whining.
We need a much better evaluation of talent on the bench. Thabeet is making huge bank and has not played much at all. If you KNOW he cant play him, trade him. Who else do we have that is not being vetted and is a potential star player?
morey and mchale r stupid Stupid motet and mchale crying about having no all stars and just let Lin slip away. Wake up and give each player some playing time to see how good they are. Next maybe twill will be an Allstate on another team with our luck.
When? We have a borderline all-star in Lowry and a starting-caliber backup in Dragic. There are no minutes on this roster for any other point guards.
What hurts the most about it isn't losing him, its that he's getting the knicks wins. If it wasn't for him the knicks just might of not made the playoffs this year, but thats over now he has that team pumped i expect them to be a top seed by the end of the year. The big Q is about this kid is, can he be consistent with his play? can he really average 25 and 8 a night for the rest of his career? He still is pretty much a rookie ( i know its his second year ) but what happens when he improves, hits his peak?? what will his numbers look like then? 30 and 10? those are MVP #'s. If so we are looking at a multi time allstar, with out a doubt this years MIP, and who knows maybe even a HOF. My bet is that his #'s die down to 15/6 by the end of the year... still pretty crazy.
Lets be real, even if we kept Lin and played him - and even if he still explodes, it would only be a matter of time before he suffers some random injury days after we trade away Goran/Lowry.
Agreed. I think if you're DM, you have to be hoping the 'Linmania' boils over and that Lin comes down to earth soon. Every game he scores over 20 and keeps the Knicks winning, it makes him look bad. IMHO, its only a matter of time before we start hearing trade rumors about Melo- he shoots way too much, commands 35+ mins a night, which is going to mean little to no playing time for guys like Novak and Fields who have been doing relatively well the last few games.
