i used to work right on 7th and congress... there was a decent middle eastern spot on congress and 8th or 9th. roaring fork had a good $10 burger and fries deal. la traviata on 2nd and congress has a delicious spaghetti bolognese lunch special (granted it is like a 10 block hike from where you're at). that's all i got.
Yes. It's very good but Perry's steak was far and away better. The lunch special pork chop is supposed to be fantastic, too. Tried to go on my day off last Friday but there was a huge wait.
in the central downtown area: jalopy sandwiches - friend is the owner/chef. great stuff, super-friendly guy. chicken sandwiches. kebabalicious - tasty wraps. cute tx roller derby girl. patika - best coffee in town (so i've heard) frank - gourmet style hot dogs, good coffee too coreanos/chilantro - korean tacos. so good. soooo goood. clay pit - lunch buffet is a great deal for indian food. cafe crepe - shared building with the hampton inn? good crepes. austin java (2nd st, city hall) - good all-around brunch food, better than ihop and kerbey lane if you are willing to go a little further south: south congress cafe - upscale food. delicious burgers. hopdoddy - the best burger in town. line gets stupid busy though. home slice pizza - best pizza in town. bouldin creek - good veggie options. hippie/hipster food. torchy's tacos - big, full-sized tacos gourdough's - gourmet donuts with toppings flip happy crepes - nom nom nom (but they take a while) p terry's burgers - our version of in-n-out if you have time to kill and want to eat the best meal in town: franklin barbecue (east of downtown) - rated #1 by bon appetit in america. spoiled the secret for all of us original austin bbq lovers.

I went with a group that all got the pork chop special and I got a ribeye. I definitely lost on that one. The pork chop was waaaaay better. My wife was there so I got to eat most of hers anyway. If you're around on Friday try Perry's.
Nice thread, I've been looking for some more places to check out. My wife and I need to get out and meet some people in Austin, we've been total hermits since moving here.
It is pork chop friday at Perry's.....11.95 and it is amazing, but you will need reservations, you can't get in otherwise as they are booked solid. The Thai place across the street was probably Thai Passion a very good eatery as well. DD
Clay Pit - Great tasting, flavorful but not overdone, and high quality indo-pak food. Jalepeno cream cheese naan is ridiculously good.
My favorite restaurant that I've been to so far in Austin is without a doubt Perla's. Both of my meals there have been extraordinary. Uchi and Uchiko are both solid as well. I'm still looking for a good Thai spot. We got takeout from Mai Thai but thought it was weak. For Tex-Mex, I wasn't crazy about Trudy's. Lately we've been going to Maudie's on Lake Austin blvd.....which is decent, but full of bratty kids. Any spots worth checking out that have good food and a good atmosphere to go with it? If you say Chuy's you fail at life.
I've been here maybe 2-3 times a month over the last year. What kind of low-key celebrity should I be looking for (not that I care that much, but just curious... never seem to spot any)? Also, I think the place is great, but a caveat for first timers... service can be very hit or miss. This refers to both the actual servers and the kitchen, which at times can be painfully slow. I'm pretty sure the owners of Perla's just opened Elizabeth Street Cafe (which was the old Bouldin Creek location). It's Vietnamese if I recall, but might work for you.

Absolute bull crap! UT bought the Players property...that place has been there a long time, and it is so delicious. I don't understand why they need that property, build in the two parking lots behind it. Or tear down that POS apartment complex Whitis Place. Or hell, nuke Dobe... but don't take Players. They just built like 3 new buildings, why not just build them taller than 4 stories and then you wouldn't have to take more land. Honestly, why do they need another campus? Didn't they cut admissions recently? I'm pretty sure it was down to like 50,000. My boss and I were just bonding about players not two days ago! Must. find. new. topic....jkj, but really our office was talking about how much they liked that place, earlier this week. The Jalopy is amazing, really nice people that work there, and you can come inside to the 7-11 across the street on 15th and San Antonio and I'll give ya a free slurpee if you tell me your moniker on here.
Ya, but awful service. We sat there for 20 minutes without anyone even coming to ask us for our drink order. Then, we got our drinks like 3 minutes before our food. I'd go back, but not in the thick of the lunch rush.
It wasn't Phoenicia Grill was it? But that is at Colorado. I really want to go to this place for lunch, feenin for some ME food!
I think he's referring to Marrakesh, which was cheap but way too slow for lunch. Phoencia is out on S. Lamar - pretty solid kebabs/shawarmas.
