Because robbers are reasonable peoples. Sure, he might have just fled but who knows if he was packing a gun ready to retaliate on the wrestler. Of course killing someone is not worth a cell phone but I'd rather choke out a robber than give him any chance of retaliation.

Too bad the headlock killed the robber - I imagine the fear if the situation and the adrenaline rush would make it hard to let go.

    This

You don't pull a gun out unless you are prepared to use it. The robber could have just tried to run off with the cell phone instead pulling out a gun. It is impossible for one to know if the robber was armed with a gun/knife.

What type of phone was it? I hope it wasn't a Nokia 5210.

You probably have to hold the choke for more than a minute for the person to actually die from it.

All I'm saying is I can't see myself choking a limp and lifeless body for a couple of minutes when I know he is out cold.

He could of squeezed hard enough to cause swelling and constrict the trachea. You don't need more than a minute to do that. There is no point in judging until the full report comes out.

In Germany we have this law that you're only allowed to take REASONABLE action to defend yourself. And from the way I read it that was definitely not the case here, so the headlocker should be convicted. I don't know how long the first headlock on his buddy took, but if his buddy wasn't close to getting killed or severely injured, that following action by the wrestler can't be justified at all. You guys say "he was arrested before blabla", but the wrestler didn't know about his police record. It could've just been a drunken idiot who wanted a cellphone and made a dumb decision by headlocking somebody.
Seriously, how many people are getting headlocked in these situations? Too many to point out, yet many of you justify killing a random person because he headlocks a friend? This is stupid, from the way I see it the robber never intended to seriously harm the two guys. Can't believe some of you are defending it and agree with the non-conviction.

Robber should have tapped out. This is what happens when you try and go all hardcore.

    Bravo to the wrestler!

If more of these asswipes DIE from the hands of their intended victims, the less we'll see of them.

Sooner of later it's going to be safer to go to freaking work than rob somebody.

It's to prevent retaliation from the thief's thug friends and hood rats. They will kill anybody that goes against them. Old lady stops a home invasion, she would be shot, too.

The problem is the definition of reasonable action. Maybe the guy held the headlock too long, but when adrenilin is flowing and they are afraid for their lives, it might just be an accident.

I have no sympathy for the guy who tried to steal and got killed because of it, he took the gamble and paid the price.

One less thief in the world is a good thing, IMO.

I hate thieves as much as the next guy (we had two cars stolen out of our driveway in Houston), but to think their death is a "good thing" is a bit extreme.

I am just saying if you are going to take the risk of being a theif, then one of the risks is that you get killed because of it.

The world needs less people that are willing to take that risk, so if my view is extreme to you....ok.....great.

    Not to me.

So, if a 15 year old kid steals a pack of gum from the 7/11, it is OK to you that the store manager kills him?
