As an Asian. Its normal to root for Asian players. Would I root for him if he sucked ass? No. You didn't see me rooting for Ha Seung-Jin. I don't even root for Yi Jianlian. But I knew that Lin had talent from the get go.
A lot of the appeal with Lin came from him being an asian from Harvard AND being able to ball. I really think it would be hard to argue that him being asian hasn't got him more name recognition which resulted in more people thinking he is good and wanting to keep him around. It's similar to eminem with em being much better at what he does. Time will tell with Lin.
