Gian Davis, 30, died after a confrontation with two men law-enforcement sources say he tried to rob.

A Newark man died after a tussle with a former high school wrestler he tried to rob early Saturday, NBC New York has learned.

Law-enforcement sources told NBC New York that 30-year-old Gian Davis approached two men near Bloomfield Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. and asked for change.

When the men said "no," he then asked to borrow a cell phone, grabbed it and tried to run off with it, sources said.

One of the men lunged to get the phone back and Davis put him in a headlock, according to sources. Then, law-enforcement sources say the other man, a former high school wrestler, pulled Davis off his friend and put the would-be robberin a headlock.

It was strong enough that Davis apparently choked to death, sources familiar with the investigation said.

A source said the two men called police and then stayed on the scene until authorities arrived. Davis was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Tom Fennelly, Chief Assistant Essex County Prosecutor, would only confirm that an investigation is ongoing.

No charges have been filed against the former wrestler or his friend. Their names have not been released.

Fennelly said they are cooperating with the investigation.

Davis had prior arrests for aggravated assault and theft. He was released from his last stint in jail on July 22.

Dang, that sucks but the guy shouldn't have tried to rob in the first place.

The wrestler went overboard with the choke and probably held on it forever, should've let go when the guy's clearly out

There's no reason to murder someone for a cellphone.

    He deserved it.
Very easily the story could have been: "Former High School Wrestler Shot and Killed for Cellphone."

i would imagine that if your life was in danger you might find it hard to scale it back.

If he had a gun he would've used it by then.

Obviously he didn't have a gun. I'm just saying the dude has had a history of crap like this. Including aggravated assault. He still deserved it.

His life was not in danger, the guy ran with his cell phone

A choke is a lethal procedure, it can kill a guy in less than a minute. Don't use deadly force if you don't know when to let go of it.

His friend's life was in danger per the story. Congrats to the dude for being a better wrestler than the would be robber. :)

Cool, I guess it's okay to put someone in a headlock and rob them for a cellphone? They shouldn't be touched...right? Totally innocent,NON-Violent crime, eh?

I guess you think the guy should have beat him with a wet noodle and begged him to let his friend go?

Seriously, what kind of pathetic life do you think this guy has that has to try to ask for change and rob people that refuse? How many other people do you think he robbed before he effed with someone that he shouldn't have? Wake the eff up.

"His life was not in danger, the guy ran with his cell phone"
Apollo, yes, he tried to get his phone back and was put in a headlock...his life was in danger. I know you're trying hard to ignore it and be on the criminal's side, but let be real about this...

he had his buddy in a head lock, maybe that's all he could do to make him let go.
