It's crazy how quickly people forget about Deke...Dalembert cant hold Deke's Jock strap.

Rofl I didn't until you posted this sorry.

My eyes will avoid tiny text around huge images.

Not making an excuse, but the text should come before those huge images if you want people not to ignore it.

And the Title says Who's the better defender. Its misleading to begin with, and its got nothing to do theirs offensive game.

Houston Deke > Dalembert as a defender, not that close really.

Really? You think the Rockets would be a better defensive unit with Deke instead of Dalembert, supposing Deke could play the same number of min.?

    R u serious?

    Borrowed this from wikipedia:

The 7 ft 2 in (2.18 m) 260 lb (120 kg), Mutombo played center, where he was regarded as one of the top post defenders of all time. Nicknamed as "Mt. Mutombo", his combination of height, power and long arms have led to a record tying four NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards, a feat equaled only by Ben Wallace. Staples of Mutombo's defensive prowess were his outstanding shot-blocking and rebounding power: for his career, he averaged 2.8 blocks and 10.3 rebounds per game. He is second all-time in registered blocks, behind only Hakeem Olajuwon, and is the 21st most prolific rebounder ever.[10] He was also an eight-time All-Star and was elected into three All-NBA and six All-Defensive Teams.[11] Along with his defensive prowess Mutombo also could contribute offensively, averaging at least 10 points per game until he reached age 35.[11]

Mutombo also achieved a certain level of on-court notoriety. After a successful block, he was known for taunting his opponents by waving his index finger, like a parent reproaching a disobedient child. Later in his career NBA officials would respond to the gesture with a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct. To avoid the technical foul, Mutombo took to waving his finger at the crowd after a block, which is not considered taunting by rules.[12] In addition, his flailing elbows were known for injuring several NBA players, including Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Charles Oakley, Patrick Ewing, Chauncey Billups, Ray Allen, Yao Ming, LeBron James and Tracy McGrady. His former teammate Yao Ming made a joke about it: "I need to talk to Coach to have Dikembe held out of practice, because if he hits somebody in practice, it's our teammate. At least in the games, it's 50/50."

I like the Dalembert pickup and have been fairly impressed with his game, however, this debate is not even close. 4 DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE YEAR.

Just an example. I guess it's hard since the title was not complete. People tend to just open the thread and click reply before reading the entire OP.... It's probably why the IQ feel on this board has deteriorated over time. There are pages of people explaining that the comparison is between Deke WITH THIS TIME ON THE ROCKETS vs. Dalembert.

Dalembert gets to shots but not as crafty in terms of falling for fakes. Deke was getting backed in by stronger centers, with Oden being the latest.

Guys, the question is about better defender. Blocks is a STAT that helps on defense, but it's not the only one. Hakeem's probably one of the top defenders of all time because he blocks shots, creates other turnovers with steals, tipped passes, etc. Dream also keeps his position better throughout his prime and has very VERY quick lateral defense and great post defense. Dalembert's post defense seems ok at best and his defensive awareness is nowhere near Deke's at any point. However, position for rebounds and overall athleticism goes to Dalembert over Deke WITH THE ROCKETS. If minutes are the same, I'd assume that Mutumbo won't be as effective. If both are playing Mutumbo's minutes, I think it could be a toss-up.

    Da-Bear is at 3.1

Well, I think that Dalembert is better today because Deke is like 89 years old and had an injury to end his career.

    So, for this team, Dally.
