Holy crap this guy's still around? He absolutely defies the law of arm falling off after throwing gazillion pitches.

shouldn't the team be trying to go in a younger direction, even at the 5 spot? puzzling regardless of how little we give hikm.

He pitches well, he gets flipped for prospects. He pitches poorly, he gets released.

If this were the Livan Hernandez of just two years ago, this would be the perfect signing for this team. He keeps a rotation spot warm until someone younger and better comes along and he has a rubber arm, which would keep the (mostly young) bullpen from being abused.

I'm not high on the guy. We could have brought up someone, ANYONE from the minors and they'd be about as productive as Livan. What's the point in having an innings eater that doesn't pitch well anymore?

To you, and the reply above you..

the dude had a 3.66 in 200+ innings the year before last. His WHIP has been between 1.3 and 1.4 the last 2 years. Better #'s than his 1999 season coincidentally, and right in line with career averages.

His velocity is down, but he's still pitching effectively. To claim anyone from the minors could be just as effective is just plain wrong... and to claim he's over the hill or different from his 1999 self is also wrong. He's probably not going to have one of his elite seasons that showed up every 4 seasons or so anyway, but he will probably do what he's done most years in his career
