A friend and his family were relocated by Cisco Systems and given 3 months rent and expenses. Cisco gives $60/day per person for groceries. Him, his wife, a 4yr old and 10yr old = $240.

No liquor or pharmaceuticals/vitamins allowed on the bill.

Also, they could only spend $240 per day. Can't buy in advance. Only one day at a time. Use it or lose it.

He said he and the wife started treating the daily shopping as a chore..."It's your turn!"

Could you pull it off for 90 straight days? If you have more than 2 kids, add $60/day per extra kid.

Why would it be a chore. They don't HAVE to do it.

But yes I could. I'd buy a ton of water bottles and food items to give to homeless ministries.

Yep, he said they would go into Wholefoods and say, how much is the aged beef ... OK, I'll take all those ribeyes. Oh, and a couple of those Lobsters, too. And tomorrow, reserve me an Aged Prime Rib = those are like $200 by themselves.

They bought a freezer. But, it is somewhat sacrilegious to freeze aged beef...and those loaded up quickly, he said.

Also, the super expensive balsamic vinegar is an excellent buy.
I've also always wanted to buy a wheel of cheese! haha

I'd also buy as much bulk nuts as possible...squirreling them away for winter.

Could a vegan pull this off?

This. I'd give back also. For my own family's sake, I'd probably stock up on bottled water and other needs, incase of any emergency.

    ...and steak every night ftw!

But unfortunately, that is a fire-able offense. If Cisco found out, he said they would fire him.

Haha, I really think I could pull this off. But as some other posters stated. I'd definitely help out people in need, but at the same time, you best believe I'm going to be eating good lol

As to whether a vegan could pull it off? That's a good question.

Your friend is incredibly lucky, especially with the high cost of food.

I'd start hoarding essentials (bottled water especially)

You can buy so many things in a grocery store nowadays that are not even food, so yes. Buy a bunch of non-perishables too for later. Just tons of soup cans, baking mix, cereal, soda, water. You can also buy wrapping paper, gift bags, small toys. Candy for Valentines and Halloween.

These details are important to give BEFORE you ask questions.

So, you have a $240 allowance and you aren't allowed to by medicine or alcohol and you can't purchase any food for anyone else and they'll fire you if you do?

OK, I go back to my first point. You aren't obligated to spend the money, so why is it a chore?

see my previous post. He says Cisco would fire you if they found out you were buying for charities or others. Anyhow, for the sake of the question...consider only buying for your family.

btw: I'm not so sure I could bring myself to freeze aged beef and lobster...seems so wrong.

Oh that sucks. Well, time to be selfish and eat good!

That's true, but I wouldn't want to let that free grocery money go to waste.

Do they ask him for the receipts? Can he basically buy anything in the grocery store that's not pharmaceuticals or liquor?

Nope. It was a per diem food allowance...not a grocery store allowance...they had to submit receipts for each purchase. no restaurants receipts, either.

justtxyank...chill man. This is just for fun, no? I assumed people knew that a per diem food allowance does not allow you to buy for others.

How about just stocking up on nonperishables, cleaning supplies, paper and plastic stuff, toilet paper etc.?

But I'd probably get lazy and only go when I needed to.

Considering when I was married and I budgeted 700 dollars a month for groceries, then yes I could definitely do this...no brainer since I am single.
