Medicare medicaid and social security make up almost half our federal spending per year though.

Well if you eat a lot of sugar sure, but as long as you moderate it, its fine.
Too much of meat isn't good for you or fish. But this whole sugar thing is blown out of proportion. The Japanese eat a ton of white rice. They live longer than most any other population. Sugar by itself really doesn't cause diabetes. But people who tend to eat a lot of sugar tend to be fat.

By the way the body is infinitely more complex than a car engine. The body has been developing for millions of years the gas engine 120. Your body is capable of adapting to a lot of conditions.

So let me get this straight. In a thread that you started b****ing about regulating sugar you are pointing out there is an obesity epidemic.

Keep in mind the traditional Japanese diet also included a lot of vegetables, little animal fat, protein from fish and soybeans and very little processed sugar. Rates of obesity and diabetes have been rising in Japan since they have started eating more a diet more like us Americans.

And yes the human body is much more complex than a car engine but if it was as adaptable as you argue we wouldn't have obesity and type II diabetes at epidemic levels as we have now.

You do know the why the USDA and FDA were founded to begin with?

I've said this before but anyone who reads Atlas Shrugged should be required to also read The Jungle.

It is adaptable, but if you eat a lot of sugar then you will be fat and once you are fat well then you will have all these issues. As long as you moderate your sugar intake your body can process it, unless you are diabetic in that case you can't. The human body can't overcome the laws of thermodynamics. It can't magically make excess calories go away. However sugar has a certain amount of calories if you eat some sugar and you use that sugar by exercising or something then the body will use that energy. It won't magically make you fat. I think a lot of people want to blame their lack of self control on a food.

I'm for everything you said. I'm on board with the "first world problems" sentiment and people being spoiled.

Though the "have it too good" argument, I think it can be too subjective shaking the finger at people needlessly.

What if people stop consuming sugar, and their productivity INCREASES and makes life even BETTER? :)

An issue should either be practical or not practical, but thats just my opinion.

You're under the misconception that all forms of sugar are equal in how your body digests and utilizes the energy contained within on a cellular level. See post 13. Understand that fructose has a different impact on digestibility, uric acid and energy conversion than other forms of sugar such as lactose or glucose.

Fructose is not found in rice, potato, or grains. It is however found in high dosages in processed foods that dominate the diet of the average american. That article states that the number one source of calories in the US diet today is in the form of soda, with estimates of 65% of the sugar contained within is fructose. All sugar is not the same, so no, I don't think the issue is overblown by any stretch of the imagination. It is downplayed due to people having the opinion you have that sugar is sugar and it all just digests the same. Meanwhile, obesity & diabetes are an epidemic. There is no reason why soda manufacturers could not use sugar instead of HFCS except for the fact that there is political capital at play. Rather convenient it is subsidized when it is creating significant health problems the rest of us get to pay for through increased insurance premiums.

    From wikipedia:

Eliminate the corn subsides and remove the tariffs on sugar and our country is on a much better path to health both physically and fiscally.
