he'll make the team one way or another. worst case, i bet he has the same chance that happ does, and they let them compete for a spot in the rotation in the spring.

I remember when I wanted the Stros to sign this guy back in the days when they were doing good, but it never happened. I think he will make the team, he cant be any worse than what they have at the bottom of the rotation.

Not surprised. What other mediocre overweight vets can the Houston Fatsos scoop up?

Yeah, Livan was an absolute horse.

And, I agree, Hernandez will eat innings from the backend while sprinkling in some flashes of yesteryear. He gives Crane another "name" player to trot out while we rebuild.

Happ $2.35 million - If he isn't on the ML roster, he will become a FA, and the Astros would be out $2.35 million. The odds of him moving to the pen are slim to none as well. Think about how awful he was last year, and they never put him in the pen.

Hernandez - Minor league contract. Can pitch for OKC until injury or trade happens.

I don't think anybody is really competing for a rotation spot unless a trade/injury happens, or Lyles pitches terribly in ST.

Looks like he's on the juice. Hope he passes the drug tests.

At least he will challenge our good hitting pitchers if he makes the team. :)

Seriously though, I thought he was suppose to been retire. His fastball clocks in at 78 on an average (joking). Not a good formula at MMP.

If we could talk the umpires into giving him the strike zone he had in the 1997 World Series then we might have something.

Fangraphs article linked on Astros County talks about how great of a teacher he was for the Nats young pitchers the last two years, "a second pitching coach"

i like this pickup! hes a good veteran pitcher who is on the decline but can still eat up innings. this is a low cost move for the astros!

I like it. Yet another low risk signing. Who knows, he could be the Brett Myers of 2 years ago.

Isn't it well-known that Hernandez lied about his age and is really older than this? Oh well, it doesn't matter. It's a low risk move that I do think will pay off, and I like the guy.

    Except Brett Myers was 29.

This is more like when we signed Russ Ortiz.

It is doubtful Livan will have trade value. Even if he pitches well, he is still only going to be a 5th starter type, and those don't have trade value. Chances are, he also has a contract out if he isn't on the ML roster by a specific date. That is the norm for veteran big leaguers signing minor league deals. Of course, Pedro Feliz got us Dan Carpenter, which is hard to believe.

Can he play in the field? He might be the best hitter on our team.
