AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Transportation officials have signed off on a faster speed limit of 75 mph for 1,500 miles of Texas highways.

The Texas Transportation Commission approved the change Thursday for segments of nine interstates where the current limit is 70 mph. Drivers must wait until the new limit is posted.

The longest stretch is 310 miles of Interstate 20 from near Fort Worth to a remote area of West Texas, where 80 mph zones have existed for several years.

Other long stretches include 139 miles of I-30 in East Texas; 145 miles of I-10 between San Antonio and Houston; and 143 miles of I-45 between Dallas and Houston.

Last year, the Legislature approved the faster speed on all rural roads deemed safe. Previously it was only allowed in sparsely populated counties.

I'm driving up to Dallas today. For long stretches I'll be well over 75 mph regardless of the limit.

Won't matter much. If idiots keep cruising 65 in the left lane , but it's good to know that I can now legally drive the speed I always have while on the highway

I was surprised to see it lately on the toll roads in Austin. No one does anywhere near 75 on them...then again, hardly anyone uses them at all.

On a separate note, what's the story with 59 becoming an interstate?

Anything over 65 mph my gas tank starts hemorrhaging gas. Time to trade in the SUV and get a smart car?

They need to change the speed limit from 65 to 75 on the stretch from Beaumont to Houston. It's terrible and cop infested.

Just remember, that this isn't official until you actually see the new speed limit signs. My wife was driving down I20 yesterday and noticed an unusual number of police. My guess is it had to do with the announcement of this change, yet no signs were posted.

I like driving 80-85 so this is going to be really cool -- no more worries with tickets driving to Houston.

:( Aw, man... I was going to carry that web page with the news of the announcement... and show it to the cops if they stopped me...

When I went to Austin in December, there was a stretch of I35 that was 75 already somewhere just north of Austin, I think. Pretty cool. I was glad when they got rid of the night speed limit.

I wish they increase the speed limit on all highways leaving Dallas so that when I am in that vicinity I can get out of there as fast as possible.

Where is the 85+ mph plan? They were supposed to pass that **** so we could all drive 85+ on most of these interstates.

Yeah, this is groovy. I'll have a nice stretch on my Austin/Houston adventures where I can go 80 with no worries. I really enjoyed going 85 on a trip to West Texas last year. (going by the "5 MPH over" rule)
